McCarthy Park Portrait Photography: Composition, Colors, and Connection
When a family tells you their favorite image works because of the composition, the colors, and the lighting, you know they see what we see. This McCarthy Park portrait photography session in Cottage Grove gave us a frame where every element locked into place.
When the Light Does the Heavy Lifting
“We found the composition, colors, and the lighting pleasing with how the family was positioned and framed. It captures us in a natural setting that we enjoy spending time together in.” That kind of feedback is exactly why we do this work.
McCarthy Youth & Conservation County Park is a location we come back to again and again. The tree canopy softens harsh light but stays open enough for golden hour to pour through in long, warm shafts. We positioned this family right where those shafts hit the trail. The fall color in the background did the rest.
Composition, color, and light. Those are the three things we think about before asking anyone to stand somewhere. When all three line up and the people in front of us are relaxed, the image just works. No forcing it. That’s what happened here, and it’s the kind of result that keeps us coming back to this park.

What makes McCarthy Park a great spot for portraits?
The mature tree canopy, winding trails, and open clearings give us a lot to work with in a single session. During fall, golden hour light filters through beautifully and the foliage adds rich, warm tones without any editing tricks.
