Sunlight, Wildflowers, and a Tiny Miracle: Summer Outdoor Newborn Session
Some babies just settle right in. This little one arrived at our summer outdoor newborn session already half asleep, wrapped up tight, and completely unbothered by the warm breeze rolling through the UW Arboretum. We knew within the first five minutes this was going to be a good one.
Golden Hour in the Meadow
We timed this session for that last stretch of evening light, the kind that turns everything it touches warm and soft. The Arboretum delivers that consistently in July. Long golden light, open meadows, tree-lined paths that filter the sun into something almost painterly. We shot wide to pull in the landscape and then moved in close for the quiet, tender stuff.
What made this session stand out was how relaxed everyone was. Mom and Dad leaned into each other like they’d forgotten we were there, and honestly, that’s when we do our best work. No stiff posing, no overthinking. Just two people completely wrapped up in this brand new little human.
One of the things we love about outdoor newborn photos in Madison is the spontaneity. A breeze catches the edge of a blanket. The light shifts through a gap in the canopy. A sibling bolts ahead on the trail. Those in-between moments are often our favorites from the final gallery, and they only happen when families let the session breathe.
If you’re considering an outdoor newborn session and want a location that feels natural without needing to drive an hour out of town, the Arboretum is hard to beat. Meadows, shade, wildflowers, and golden light, all within walking distance. We’ve shot here more times than we can count, and it never gets old. Take a look at our newborn and maternity portfolio to see more of what we do.
When is the best time of year for an outdoor newborn session at UW Arboretum?
Late spring through early fall gives us the longest golden hour and the most greenery to work with. July is especially beautiful because the wildflower meadows are in full bloom and the light lingers well past seven.
