All the Feels: February Desert Family Session

Their daughter had this laugh that echoed off the saguaros. Full volume, zero self-consciousness, the kind of joy you can’t stage. That energy set the tone for this February desert family session at Usery Mountain Regional Park in Mesa, and we leaned into every second of it.

Desert Light and Wide Open Space

February in the Sonoran Desert is a different world than the summer heat most people picture. The air is cool. The light drops low and golden early. Everything feels unhurried. We timed this session for that late afternoon window when the sun wraps around the landscape. Warm tones, soft shadows, and saguaros stretching tall in every frame.

We always tell families to just be themselves during a session. Play, chase, tickle, be ridiculous. The real moments live in those in-between seconds. A look exchanged over a kid’s head. Someone getting scooped up mid-sprint. A laugh that catches everyone off guard. That’s where we aim our cameras, and this family made it easy. They were completely present with each other, not performing for us. Honestly, that is when we do our best work.

If you’re considering family photography in Mesa, Usery Mountain is worth a serious look. Rocky trails, open desert floor, towering cacti, and that incredible Arizona sky are all within a short walk from the trailhead. It gives us variety without rushing anyone from spot to spot. After two decades of photographing families, the desert still surprises us. All that wide open space helps people exhale. Connection follows. Check out more of our family session work here.

Frequently Asked Questions about Family Sessions at Usery Mountain Regional Park

When is the best time of year for family photos at Usery Mountain Regional Park?

Late fall through early spring is ideal. February is one of our favorites because the temperatures are comfortable, wildflowers are starting to appear, and the golden hour light lasts longer against the desert landscape. Summer sessions here are tough due to extreme heat.
