Perfectly Imperfect: A Summer Family Farm Session
Two boys, a cow, a mud box, and a red tractor. That’s all it took. This summer family farm session near Watertown gave us one of those evenings where we barely had to direct a single frame. The light was golden, the kids were fearless, and the whole property felt like it had been waiting for exactly this kind of chaos.

Let Them Be Wild
We always tell families the same thing: don’t worry about keeping it together. The messy, loud, slightly out-of-control moments are exactly what we’re after. These two brothers delivered on all of it. One minute they were holding hands in the pasture next to a grazing cow. The next they were sprinting full speed toward the camera, laughing so hard they could barely stay upright.

A farm gives kids permission to just be kids. There’s no pristine backdrop to protect, no keeping shoes clean, no staying on the path. We leaned into every bit of that freedom, shooting wide to let the barns and silos frame the story and pulling in tight when the connection between these two was too good to miss.

That toddler running straight at us with pure joy on his face? We live for that shot. It can’t be posed. It can’t be recreated. The only move is to be ready. And honestly, that’s when we do our best work: when nobody is thinking about the camera at all.

A vintage red tractor. A dirt lane with silos in the distance. The hug that happened completely on its own. Every corner of this property gave us something real. If you’re a Wisconsin family looking for portraits that actually feel like your life, a farm session like this is worth considering. The session ended with both boys shirtless in a mud box, pushing toy tractors through the dirt. No complaints from us. That kind of unfiltered, end-of-summer energy is exactly what rural Watertown delivers. Worn wood, warm light, and kids covered in mud. It doesn’t get more honest than that.
Where do you find farm locations for family sessions in Wisconsin?
Over the years we’ve built relationships with families and property owners across the state who welcome portrait sessions on their land. If you have a family farm or rural property you love, we’re happy to scout it beforehand and plan around the best light.
What should kids wear to an outdoor farm session?
Keep it comfortable and keep it them. Bare feet, play clothes, and layers that can come off are all fair game. We care more about how your kids feel than what they’re wearing, because relaxed kids make the best photos.
