Matthew & Kristina: A Fall Celebration at The Abbey Resort
October light is its own animal. It turns everything golden and a little moody, and Matthew and Kristina’s wedding day had it in full force. Leaves mid-turn, that first real bite of autumn hanging in the air, and two people so locked into each other that shooting them felt effortless. Their Abbey Resort wedding photography ended up being one of those galleries where we kept stopping on the back of the camera thinking, “Yeah, that’s the one.” Rich burgundy dahlias, fiery reds climbing vine-covered harbor walls, soft lake light doing its thing. Fall at this venue is something else entirely.
Getting Ready at The Abbey Resort
Both sides had rooms just steps from the lake, which made the whole morning feel unhurried. Kristina’s lace-sleeved gown was hanging outside against the cedar siding when we walked in. That soft overcast light was doing all the heavy lifting. Her bouquet genuinely stopped us: deep burgundy dahlias, peach ranunculus, red garden roses, eucalyptus that you could smell from across the room. On Matthew’s side, everything was clean and confident. Black suit, brown leather shoes, cream tie laid out on magenta coleus. No fuss, no overthinking. Just ready.
For the first look, we set up in one of the resort’s arched skywalks. That spot was a photographer’s gift. The curved white ceiling gave us a natural leading line straight to them, and the even, diffused light was perfect. Matthew turned around and just lit up. Kristina grabbed his hand, and they stood there grinning like nobody else was in the building. Those quiet minutes before the day takes off are often the frames couples return to years later. This first look is a perfect example of why.
A Gazebo Ceremony on the Harbor
White chairs lined the brick path with the marina and fall trees filling every inch of background. We shot wide because the setting flat-out demanded it. Kristina came down the aisle on her father’s arm, bouquet held tight. Matthew could not stop smiling. Their officiant stood beneath a floral arch of eucalyptus and white hydrangeas, and even with all that open lakeside air, the ceremony felt surprisingly intimate. Pulling that off outdoors is harder than people think. These two nailed it.
Afterward, the full wedding party gathered nearby for group photos. The kids immediately stole the show. Flower girls in dusty rose dresses grinned straight into our lens while the adults cheered behind them. One groomsman threw his fist in the air during the kiss shot. That kind of unscripted energy makes a wedding party photo feel alive instead of posed. Those are always our favorite frames to deliver, because you can’t fake that kind of joy.
Fall Portraits Down a Hidden Path
Stealing the couple away for portraits is always one of our favorite parts of any wedding day. This one absolutely delivered. A secluded path led us to a stretch of road canopied by golden and orange trees. Leaves scattered across the pavement like someone had art-directed the whole thing. Soft light filtered through in patches, and Matthew and Kristina just leaned into each other. These two were completely relaxed, and honestly, that is when we do our best work. No coaching needed. Just presence.
From there, we moved to a quieter spot where dark pines and a stone ledge gave us something moodier. The contrast between those warm bouquet tones and the cool evening air made every frame feel rich. This is the kind of Abbey Resort wedding photography that reminds us why fall here is simply unmatched. The season does half the work for you. If you’re considering a Lake Geneva wedding in October, picture yourself on this path with the trees turning gold. It’s as good as it looks.
Reception Details and the First Dance
Inside, the reception space had a warm, candlelit glow that pulled everything together. Burgundy napkins, gold chiavari chairs, eucalyptus runners, calligraphy table numbers. A Polaroid guest book station with a custom wooden sign added personality without feeling overdone. Every table felt intentional. We pulled in close on the details because the styling earned it. That warm flicker of candlelight gave us exactly the texture we love to capture.
Then the lights dimmed for the first dance. Matthew and Kristina owned that floor. She threw her head back laughing while he pulled her close, and you could hear the room collectively melt. That shift from polished ceremony to candlelit romance to pure, unguarded laughter is something we live for. It was a perfect close to a day that felt, start to finish, like it truly belonged to them. If you’re drawn to this kind of storytelling, we’d love to show you more from our wedding photography portfolio.

What makes The Abbey Resort a great venue for wedding photography?
The Abbey Resort offers a rare combination of waterfront ceremony space, manicured grounds, and elegant indoor reception halls. Its lakeside gazebo is stunning for ceremonies, while surrounding paths and fall foliage provide incredible variety for portraits. Unique indoor options like the arched skywalks also work beautifully for first looks and rainy-day coverage.
What should we know about planning a fall wedding in Lake Geneva?
Fall weddings in Lake Geneva benefit from gorgeous foliage that peaks in mid-October. Plan for cooler temperatures and build extra time for golden hour portraits, which arrive earlier in the season. Moody skies and warm leaf tones create a naturally dramatic backdrop that photographs beautifully without much extra styling.
