Stormy Skies and a Surprise Rainbow: A Summer Wedding at Prevailing Winds Lodge

Dark clouds rolled in all afternoon, the wind picked up, and the sky turned the kind of moody gray that makes most people nervous. Not these two. They stood in that open field and said their vows anyway, completely present, completely unbothered. And then, right after the ceremony, a rainbow broke through the storm clouds behind them. You can’t plan that. This Prevailing Winds Lodge summer wedding gave us the kind of frames we’ll be talking about for years.

Getting Ready in the Lodge

Prevailing Winds has this log cabin character that photographs beautifully in low light. Outside on the rustic porch, the groom sat reading a card, backlit by the trees. Inside, the bride stood in front of dark carved wood furniture with her mom close by, and the warmth in that room was something we could feel through the lens. His dad helped him with his suspenders while groomsmen got each other squared away nearby. Meanwhile, the bridesmaids wrapped the bride in a group hug that nearly knocked everyone over. Those are the moments that make getting-ready coverage worth every minute.

Details were soft and natural throughout. Blush roses and baby’s breath in the bouquet. Crystal-studded heels nestled into yellow wildflowers. Tan suede shoes with a pink bowtie draped over them. Her dress hung on a wrought iron garden arch with the green hills of Blue Mounds stretching out behind it. Every texture felt intentional, and the overcast sky gave us even, gorgeous light for all of it.

First Look Under the Oaks

Their first look happened beneath a canopy of old oak trees on the property. She walked toward him through the grass, veil catching the breeze, and when he turned around, his whole face just opened up. That hug lasted a while. From there they held hands, leaned into each other, laughed, and gave us frame after frame of genuine connection. Honestly, this is when we do our best work. When a couple forgets the camera is there and just exists together.

If you’re considering Prevailing Winds Lodge for your own wedding, know that the grounds give you variety without ever having to leave. Mature trees for shade and intimacy. Open fields for big skies. Dirt paths for walking shots. All of it within a short stroll. That flexibility is a huge gift on a wedding day.

Dogs, Confetti, and a Wedding Party with Energy

After the first look, two tiny dogs in matching outfits showed up for portraits. One wore a little white dress, the other a bowtie. Both got scooped up immediately, and the joy on the couple’s faces was so pure it practically jumped off the sensor. Dogs at weddings always add something you can’t manufacture.

Their wedding party brought incredible energy to every shot. Bridesmaids in mismatched jewel tones, groomsmen in suspenders and bowties. They walked together down a path lined with evergreens, laughing and bumping into each other. Then came the confetti toss on the hilltop. Arms in the air, mouths wide open, colorful confetti catching the wind against those moody clouds. That wide shot with the rolling hills behind them is one of our favorites from the entire summer.

Vows Under Storm Clouds

The ceremony took place in an open field with a simple wooden arbor and dramatic sky filling every inch of the background. Live musicians played under a clear tent nearby. Her dad walked her down the aisle, beaming. Guests sat on white chairs facing the wide-open landscape, and the clouds just kept building. It felt cinematic, like the weather was raising the stakes right alongside the vows.

Their first kiss happened right as the sky started to break. Light shifted, clouds parted just enough, and the whole scene changed. We knew to shoot wide for moments like this. The arbor, the bridal party, the sky taking up two-thirds of the frame. This is the kind of Prevailing Winds Lodge summer wedding photography that stops people mid-scroll, and we were ready for every second of it.

The Rainbow Nobody Expected

After the ceremony, the couple walked up the hill for a few portraits. Storm clouds were still thick and dark on one side of the sky, but on the other, warm golden light was starting to push through. And then it appeared. A full rainbow stretching across the field behind them. Not a faint one either. Bold, vivid, unmistakable.

That kind of moment is why we love what we do. No amount of planning creates that. It just happens, and you either catch it or you don’t. They kissed in the tall grass with the rainbow and rolling storm behind them, and the whole hilltop felt electric. For us, it was the exclamation point on an already incredible day.

Tented Reception with Personal Touches

Reception life happened under a large clear-top tent on the property. Kraft paper escort cards with handwritten names. A Polaroid guest book station. White cake with cascading eucalyptus. Simple, personal, and perfectly them. One of our favorite details was the geometric table numbers paired with small wildflower arrangements. Nothing overdone, nothing trying too hard.

Their first dance happened as evening light turned soft and blue through the tent walls. Guests watched from their tables, and the couple swayed close with foreheads touching. That quiet intimacy right in the middle of a crowd is something we always pull in tight for. Background fades, the couple fills the frame, and everything else drops away.
