A Classic Elegant Summer Wedding: Black Tie on Lake Mendota at The Edgewater
Black tuxedos, a beaded gown, golden hour on a pier over Lake Mendota. This classic elegant summer wedding had a polish to it that we felt from the very first frame. The morning started at The Edgewater, where both sides of the wedding party got ready in separate suites, and the energy was loose and happy right from the start. From there, the ceremony moved to St. Paul’s Catholic Church before the whole celebration came back to the lake for a reception that matched the scale of the day itself.
Getting Ready at The Edgewater
The Edgewater suites gave us room to work and beautiful natural light pouring through floor-to-ceiling windows. On the bride’s side, her mom helped zip up a beaded, blush-toned gown, and the whole room went quiet for a second. That’s the kind of moment we shoot for. Meanwhile, the groomsmen were across the hall helping the groom with cufflinks and suspenders, cracking jokes the entire time. The contrast between those two rooms is always one of our favorite things to document.
Detail-wise, this couple brought it. A classic black tux hanging against warm wood paneling. Crystal-embellished heels on a dark surface next to the invitation suite. Cufflinks in a velvet box. The bouquet was soft and romantic, with blush garden roses, eucalyptus, and cream peonies. All of it felt intentional without being overdone, and that made our job easy.
The Ceremony at St. Paul’s
St. Paul’s Catholic Church is one of those spaces where you walk in and immediately look up. Painted arches, ornate murals, marble columns. Every angle had something worth framing. The bride came down the aisle on her dad’s arm, bouquet in hand, grinning. Her groom stood at the altar trying to keep it together, and honestly, he almost made it. Those reactions are what we live for behind the camera.
The light inside the church was warm and steady, coming through tall stained glass on both sides. It let us shoot naturally without fighting the room, which is exactly what a ceremony like this calls for. Sacred, unhurried, full of meaning. If you’re considering a Catholic ceremony before an Edgewater reception, this is the kind of pairing that photographs beautifully from start to finish.
The Wedding Party and That Bus Ride
After the ceremony, the entire wedding party piled onto a bus, and the energy shifted immediately. Cheering, champagne, the whole crew celebrating together. One of the groomsmen photos on the tree-lined path still makes us laugh. Top frame: everyone looking sharp, walking toward the camera in formation. Bottom frame: a pile-on group hug, one guy screaming. That contrast tells you everything about this crew.
The bridesmaids in their rose-colored dresses were just as fun. Bouquets up, laughing with the bride, completely in the moment. These are the photos that don’t require posing. You just put the right group of people together and let them be themselves. The bus ride between church and the reception gave us a few great candid frames too, all in black and white, all perfectly chaotic.
Golden Hour Portraits on the Lake
This is the part of the day we planned everything around. Golden hour at The Edgewater’s pier is, honestly, one of the best portrait opportunities in all of Madison. The sun drops toward the far end of Lake Mendota, the water turns gold, and you have about thirty minutes of perfect light. These two gave us every bit of it.
The bride twirled on the dock and her gown caught the wind off the lake. Her groom dipped her with the sunset behind them. In between the bigger moments, they’d just lean in and laugh, foreheads together, completely unaware of the camera. That’s when we do our best work. The wildflower path near the lakeshore was another favorite spot, with black-eyed Susans framing everything in warm yellow. A classic elegant summer wedding like this one doesn’t need much styling when the setting does the heavy lifting.
The Reception Inside The Edgewater
Inside, the ballroom was set for a big night. Tall floral centerpieces with blush roses and greenery. Iron chandeliers casting warm, amber light across every table. A tiered cake with fresh flowers. And a boxwood wall with “the Gaffneys” in script, which gave us a great backdrop for candid guest shots throughout the evening.
The first dance was quiet and close. Just the two of them in the center of the room, the tall windows behind them catching the last traces of twilight. Felix & Fingers kept the party going from there, and by the end of the night the dance floor was packed. That shift from polished ceremony to late-night party energy is something we live for, and this day delivered both in full. What are the best spots for portraits at The Edgewater?
The private pier is the standout. During golden hour, the light reflecting off Lake Mendota is extraordinary, and the long dock gives you a clean, open backdrop with water on both sides. Beyond the pier, the tree-lined lakeshore path and nearby wildflower gardens offer more intimate, natural settings. Inside, the warm lighting and iron chandeliers work well for reception portraits too.
How do you handle a wedding day split between a church ceremony and The Edgewater reception?
Timeline planning is everything. We work with our couples to build in enough buffer between the ceremony and reception so portraits don’t feel rushed. St. Paul’s Catholic Church is close to The Edgewater, which helps. Our goal is to capture the reverence of the church and then make the most of that lakeside golden hour once everyone arrives at the reception venue.
We’re planning a wedding in the Madison area. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! We love working in the Madison area. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
