Olivia & Austin: A Basilica of St Francis Xavier Wedding in Dyersville

Some weddings you remember because of the venue. Others stick with you because of the couple. Olivia and Austin’s Basilica of St Francis Xavier wedding in Dyersville gave us both. August heat hung heavy over the Iowa cornfields, and storm clouds stacked up on the horizon. These two moved through every single moment like nothing else existed. Their day stretched from gothic arches to a candlelit reception at The Milestone Event Center, with a detour to a local racetrack. That stop gave us some of the most unexpectedly fun portraits we’ve delivered in a long time.

Getting Ready and a First Look Full of Feeling

Olivia got ready in a family home with soft window light that makes our job easy. Her mom and sister were close, helping with every small thing. Steady warmth filled the room. No rush. No chaos. Just quiet excitement building. Her lace gown hung against a stone wall, and every detail felt intentional: rings nestled in greenery, crystal-strap heels, a moody bouquet of rust, blush, and sage. We pulled in tight on those details because they told you exactly who this couple is before the day even started.

Austin, meanwhile, had his own crew around him. His mom straightened his tie while he grinned through it, trying to play it cool. Once he was suited up, the nerves were right there on the surface, but in the best way. Their first look happened outside along a brick-lined walkway. As soon as Austin turned around, the composure was gone. He pulled her in tight. No words. Just that. Honestly, those are the frames we think about weeks later.

A Catholic Ceremony Under Soaring Arches

We have photographed a lot of churches. The Basilica of St Francis Xavier is in a category by itself. Twin spires rise above Dyersville, and when you step inside, ornate gold and blue vaulted ceilings pull your eyes straight up. Late-afternoon light filtered through the stained glass, painting color across the pews. We shot wide to capture the sheer scale of the space, because anything less would have sold it short. If you’re considering this venue for your own ceremony, every angle gives you something extraordinary to work with.

Olivia and Austin’s traditional Catholic ceremony matched the grandeur perfectly. You could feel the reverence of the liturgy, the weight of their promises, every glance upward revealing another layer of detail. After the recessional, the full wedding party gathered at a nearby industrial building with corrugated metal siding. Groomsmen in black suits stood sharp against the gray. Bridesmaids in blush and champagne brought warmth and color. Then the whole group erupted when Olivia and Austin kissed in the middle of the crowd. That kind of energy is impossible to manufacture, and we were ready for it.

Racetrack Portraits and Iowa Storm Light

One of our favorite things about this Basilica of St Francis Xavier wedding was Olivia and Austin’s willingness to go completely off-script. Between the ceremony and reception, we stopped at a local racetrack for portraits. Red steel bleachers. A “Welcome Race Fans” sign. Hazy golden light cutting through the structure. It gave us a backdrop no one would expect from a wedding gallery. These two leaned into it with huge smiles, and that willingness to try something different is when we do our best work.

From there, we moved to a quiet rural road where dramatic storm clouds were gathering fast. Olivia’s veil caught the wind. That contrast between white lace and heavy gray sky was striking. We shot low to let those clouds fill the frame, and the result is a portrait that only happens when conditions align in ways you can’t plan. Iowa’s landscape offers textures and drama that make Dubuque area wedding photography endlessly rewarding.

Candlelit Reception at The Milestone

Over at The Milestone Event Center in Farley, the reception was a complete shift from the basilica, and that was exactly the point. Moody, modern, dripping with candlelight. Long greenery runners stretched down the tables. Gold geometric accents caught the glow, and tall floral centerpieces in rich autumn tones anchored the room. A “Breitbach” marquee sign hung above the head table, while gold-rimmed chargers marked every place setting. Every corner of that space felt warm and intentional.

A gold hoop stand held the wedding cake, surrounded by taper candles and trailing greenery. Nearby, a dessert display of mini cupcakes and chocolate treats added to the spread. When the lights dimmed for the first dance, warm amber uplighting reflected off the polished floor and guests circled in close. We pulled in tight for those last moments because that is where the real feeling lives. This day never lost its momentum, and neither did these two.

Frequently Asked Questions about Basilica of St Francis Xavier Weddings

What is it like to photograph a wedding at the Basilica of St Francis Xavier?

The Basilica is one of the most visually dramatic churches in the Midwest. Soaring vaulted ceilings, ornate gold detailing, and stained glass windows create layers of color and depth. We approach the ceremony respectfully, working with available light to capture the scale of the space and the emotion of the moment without disrupting the service.

How do you handle a wedding with separate ceremony and reception venues?

Careful timeline planning is everything. We work with our couples ahead of time to build a schedule that accounts for travel between locations and still leaves plenty of room for portraits. Olivia and Austin’s day included a stop at a racetrack between venues, and the extra time for creative portraits was absolutely worth it.

We’re planning a wedding in the Dyersville area. How can we see more of your work?

Congratulations! We love working in the Dyersville and greater Dubuque area. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
