A Vintage Boho Summer Wedding: Sunflowers, Lace & Love in Barneveld

Some weddings feel like they belong to a place, and this one belonged to the land it was built on. Ashlyn and Mitchell’s vintage boho summer wedding at a private residence in Barneveld, Wisconsin, was everything we love about shooting on family property: personal, layered with meaning, and completely impossible to replicate anywhere else. Her parents’ land became the backdrop for every frame, and honestly, it gave us more to work with than most venues ever could.

Getting Ready Among the Sunflowers

Ashlyn got ready in the house she grew up in, and that kind of detail matters. There’s a comfort level you can’t fake when someone is surrounded by their own people in their own space. Her lace gown hanging in the sunflower stalks outside gave us one of those detail shots that just works on every level: the texture, the warm tones, the feeling of a day that’s been dreamed about for a long time. Meanwhile, Mitchell was out in the grass lacing his shoes in golden afternoon light while his mom helped with his bow tie. We pulled in close for that one because the tenderness between them was too good to shoot from a distance.

The details alone could have told the whole story. A bouquet overflowing with sunflowers, roses, dahlias, and eucalyptus. White pointed-toe heels nestled in greenery. Rings resting on dark berries. A navy suit hanging from an evergreen branch. Nothing felt forced or sourced from a Pinterest board for the sake of it. Every piece was intentional, organic, and completely theirs.

A Backyard Ceremony Full of Heart

Beneath a wooden arbor draped in sunflowers and warm-toned blooms, Ashlyn walked the aisle with both parents, beaming the entire way. Guests sat in wooden chairs on the lawn, framed by evergreens and wide open sky. A tiny flower girl with sunflowers woven into her hair watched from the front row, completely captivated. We caught her expression mid-ceremony, and it might be one of our favorite candid frames from the entire day.

One of our favorite things about a backyard wedding in Wisconsin is the sense of place. This wasn’t a rented venue. It was home. You could feel that in every laugh, every teary smile, every hand squeezed during the vows. If you’re considering a private residence for your own celebration, know that the intimacy of it translates into the photographs in a way that’s hard to describe until you see your own gallery. After the rings were exchanged, Ashlyn and Mitchell walked back down the aisle together, grinning and holding their bouquet high like a victory lap.

Portraits in the Fields

After the ceremony, we took Ashlyn and Mitchell out into the property for portraits, and this is where having all that land really paid off. The sunflower patch was the obvious first stop. Tall stalks towered over them while they kissed and laughed, completely at ease. These two were relaxed from the very first frame, and that is when we do our best work. From there, we moved into a stretch of purple wildflowers where the light was soft and moody. The overcast sky gave us beautiful even tones, which meant rich, saturated color without fighting harsh shadows.

Then came the open field. A wide, green expanse with a tree line of evergreens on the horizon. We shot wide on purpose here, letting the couple stand alone in all that space, small against the landscape. It was one of those compositions that makes you hold your breath behind the camera. As the evening settled in, the clouds broke just enough to reveal a stunning pink and crimson sunset. Their silhouettes against that sky became one of the most striking images from this vintage boho summer wedding, and honestly, that’s not something you can plan. You just have to be ready when the light decides to show up.

Tented Reception with Vintage Details

Inside the clear-top tent, every surface felt warm and considered. Wooden charger plates at each setting. Hand-lettered name cards in gold script. Floral garlands running the length of the head table, filled with the same sunflowers, dahlias, roses, and eucalyptus from the ceremony. Candlelight caught the gold flatware and champagne flutes in a way that made our job easy. This is the kind of reception styling that photographs itself.

The cake was a showstopper: three tiers of textured buttercream adorned with fresh flowers, displayed on a rustic wood round. Ashlyn and Mitchell cut it together laughing, and that energy carried straight into the first dance. String lights overhead cast a soft glow while a hanging greenery installation framed the moment perfectly. Guests circled the dance floor with drinks in hand, watching two people who were clearly exactly where they wanted to be. That shift from a heartfelt ceremony to an open-air party under the stars is something we live for, and this night delivered all of it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Backyard Weddings in Wisconsin

What should we know about planning a wedding at a private residence?

A backyard wedding is one of the most personal choices you can make. Start by hiring a reliable rental company for the tent, tables, chairs, and lighting. Think through logistics like parking, restroom facilities, and power for your vendors. Most importantly, lean into the setting. The personal touches that come naturally with a family property are what make these celebrations unforgettable.

How do you photograph a boho or vintage-themed wedding?

For a themed celebration like a vintage boho summer wedding, we focus on the details that define the look: lace textures, wildflower bouquets, hand-lettered signage, and candlelit tablescapes. Beyond that, we seek out soft, natural light and settings that complement the relaxed, free-spirited energy. Candid moments between the couple and their guests often tell the story better than posed shots ever could.
