A September Lakeside Celebration: The Edgewater Wedding Photos

Late September light on Lake Mendota has this quality we can’t quite describe, soft and golden with just enough breeze to keep things interesting. That’s exactly what greeted us for this Edgewater wedding photos session in downtown Madison. The wind caught the bride’s hair at all the right moments, the couple laughed through every frame, and by the time we made it out to the pier for sunset portraits, we knew this gallery was going to be something special.

Getting Ready at The Edgewater

The morning started on two sides of the hotel. On one end, bridesmaids in blush robes were toasting champagne on a teal velvet couch while the bride’s mom helped zip her into a stunning beaded lace gown. On the other, the groom was tying a sage green tie in front of a stone fireplace, looking calm and focused. Those getting-ready rooms at The Edgewater give us so much to work with. Rich textures everywhere, stone walls, warm wood, deep velvet furniture, create a mood before we even pick up a camera.

One detail that stopped us: the custom “Mrs. Hoagland” hanger holding the dress against a dark wall. Simple, personal, and it photographed beautifully. Nearby, the navy suit hung pressed and ready, pocket square already tucked. Every small choice these two made told a story of intention.

The First Look and Ceremony on the Grand Plaza

Their first look happened in a quiet courtyard tucked behind the hotel. She came around the corner, and he turned, and honestly, the grin on his face was immediate. No hesitation, no playing it cool. Just pure joy. These two were completely relaxed, and that is when we do our best work.

From there, guests gathered on The Edgewater’s Grand Plaza for the ceremony. Down the grand staircase came the bride on her father’s arm, both of them beaming, with Lake Mendota stretching out wide behind the entire scene. If you’re considering a downtown Madison September wedding, picture this: vows exchanged lakeside with the city skyline in the distance and warm September air wrapping around everything. It doesn’t get much better than that.

We shot wide to capture the full scale of that staircase entrance, then pulled in tight for the vows. Her face during his words, that laugh when he stumbled on a line, their first kiss with the iron railing and open water framing everything behind them. Those are the frames that matter.

Wedding Party and Portraits

The wedding party was fun and easy to work with. Bridesmaids in deep emerald green, groomsmen in navy with sage ties, and white floral bouquets tying it all together. Rich color without being heavy, and it photographed beautifully against the warm limestone and brick of the hotel exterior. One of our favorite things about shooting at The Edgewater is how many different backdrops exist within a short walk. Stairways, the plaza, stone walls, the original ivy-covered building next door.

That ivy wall deserves its own paragraph. Thick green vines climbing over old stone, leaded glass windows barely visible underneath. Light filtering through the leaves gave us this soft, almost storybook quality. It’s the kind of backdrop a photographer dreams about, and these two leaned into it perfectly. We kept our direction minimal and let them be together. As a result, the portraits feel real and warm.

Sunset on the Pier

After the ceremony, we took the couple out to the private pier on Lake Mendota. Wind had picked up, light was going golden, and the water was choppy enough to catch that warm glow across every wave. This is the kind of Edgewater wedding photography Madison couples book us for. That pier, those red Adirondack chairs, and a skyline softening in the distance all come together in a way that’s hard to replicate anywhere else in the city.

They danced on the dock. They sat in the red chairs and leaned into each other like no one else was there. Wind kept pulling her hair across her face, and instead of fighting it, she just laughed. Those windswept, unposed moments are the ones we find ourselves going back to when we build a gallery. Real always wins.

Reception Details and the First Dance

Inside, The Edgewater’s ballroom brought a completely different energy. Warm amber light from circular chandeliers, gold-rimmed charger plates, and deep green escort cards with calligraphy. A white rose cake stood at the center, simple and elegant. Every detail matched the tone of the day perfectly, polished but never stiff.

For the first dance, we pulled in close. Warm light softened their faces as the ballroom went quiet, and he held her like the room had emptied out completely. She smiled, he teared up, and guests around them barely breathed. That shift from a breezy lakeside ceremony to this intimate, golden reception moment is something we live for as photographers.
