Alexa & Jon’s Urban Fall Celebration at the Orpheum Theater
Alexa and Jon had the kind of energy that makes our job feel effortless. They were laughing before we even started shooting, and that warmth carried through every frame of their Orpheum Theater Madison wedding. A navy suit with a cranberry tie. A sleek halter gown with beaded details down the back. Fall leaves scattered across State Street. It all came together in a way that felt polished but never stiff.
Getting Ready with Capitol Views
Jon got ready in a hotel room high above the city. Light poured through floor-to-ceiling windows, and the Wisconsin State Capitol sat right outside the glass. It was framed perfectly behind him as he knotted his tie. Those are the kinds of details we look for, the ones that root a wedding in a specific place. Meanwhile, Alexa’s mom helped her into her dress a few floors away. Quiet and real, that tenderness between them needed no direction from us.
From there, the first look happened on a rooftop terrace overlooking the city. Overcast skies gave us soft, even light with no harsh shadows to fight. Alexa came around the corner, Jon turned, and both of them dissolved into the biggest grins. That’s the thing about couples who are genuinely relaxed: the moments come to you. All we have to do is be ready.
Downtown Madison Portraits
After the first look, we took Alexa and Jon out onto State Street. If you’re considering a downtown Madison venue, this is exactly the kind of urban backdrop that makes portrait time feel like an adventure. Golden fall leaves on the sidewalks. Limestone buildings catching late-afternoon light. Capitol dome visible at the end of every block. Our favorite frame from the walk might be Alexa laughing with her sister, the two of them completely unposed and lit by warm glow bouncing off storefront windows.
Before heading to the ceremony, the rooftop gave us one more gift. The vertical “New Orpheum” sign was glowing red just behind the couple, and we pulled in tight to let the neon and the Madison skyline do the work. That contrast between the old theater sign and the modern rooftop railing? A photographer’s dream.
A Ceremony on the Orpheum Stage
Here’s what makes the Orpheum unlike any other venue in Madison: you get married on a stage. Red velvet curtains, ornate plasterwork, dramatic lighting that wraps the entire room in warmth. Guests sat in the theater seats, and Alexa walked down the center aisle like she owned the place (she did, for the night). We shot wide from the balcony to capture the full scope of the space, then moved in close for the vows. At one point the officiant had everyone laughing, and Alexa’s reaction was pure gold.
This is exactly the kind of Orpheum Theater Madison wedding photography couples book us for. The venue does so much heavy lifting with atmosphere, but you still need to know how to work with moody, low ambient light and shifting color temperatures. It’s a space that rewards experience behind the camera.
Reception Energy and Late-Night Magic
Round tables filled the main floor beneath that incredible painted ceiling. A “LOVE” marquee sign glowed on the stage, and the dessert spread was stacked with cupcakes, bundt cakes, and a gorgeous watercolor-style cake topped with gold lettering. Thoughtful details without being overdone.
One of our favorite images from the entire night came during the group photo on the ornate staircase. Alexa and Jon kissed at the center while their friends went absolutely wild around them. That kind of frame can’t be planned. It just happens when people are having a genuinely great time. Later, their first dance was all slow swaying and quiet conversation. We went to black and white to match the intimacy of that moment. Shifting from loud, chaotic group energy to a still, tender dance is something we live for.

What makes the Orpheum Theater a great venue for wedding photos?
The Orpheum has so much built-in character that it practically photographs itself. Its historic marquee, ornate lobby staircase, red velvet curtains, and dramatic stage lighting all create rich, layered backdrops. Location on State Street also means you can step outside for urban portraits with fall foliage and the Capitol dome just blocks away.
How do you handle the low lighting inside the Orpheum Theater?
Moody, warm light is one of the Orpheum’s best features, and we lean into it rather than fighting it. Years of experience shooting in low-light venues means we know how to balance ambient theater lighting with our own gear to keep the atmosphere intact while still delivering sharp, vibrant images.
We’re planning a wedding in the Madison area. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! We love working in the Madison area. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
