The Good Stuff: Moody Spring Family Session
Overcast skies get a bad reputation, but honestly, they’re our favorite thing to shoot under. This moody spring family session in Madison had that restless, electric energy that only comes when the clouds roll low and the greens start popping. No harsh shadows. No squinting. Just soft, even light and a family that was completely game for whatever we wanted to try.

Chasing the Clouds
We’ve been at this for over two decades, and we can tell you: the sessions that look the richest almost always happen under moody skies. The light wraps around everything. Colors in the grass and the trees saturate in a way that clear blue evenings just can’t deliver. When clouds like these show up, we don’t cancel. We grab the gear faster.

This crew had their own rhythm, and it was loud and physical and wonderful. The kids were sprinting between takes. Mom and Dad kept pulling each other close when they thought no one was looking. We shot loose and let them move, because that’s where the real frames live. If you’re considering family photography in Wisconsin, spring is one of the most underrated times to book.

There’s something about converting these overcast sessions to black and white that just works. The tonal range is already there in the sky, and it carries through the whole frame. This image of the five of them cracking up along a fence line is one of our favorites from the evening. Not posed. Not planned. Just a family being exactly who they are.

The dandelion moment at the end was pure magic. We didn’t ask for it. She just found one and started blowing, and we pulled in tight. That’s the kind of thing we live for: the unscripted detail that makes a gallery feel like a story instead of a checklist. Moody light, messy hair, bare feet in the grass. Madison’s green spaces give us so many corners to explore, and this evening reminded us why we keep coming back. That’s the good stuff.
What happens if it’s cloudy on the day of our family session?
We never cancel for clouds. Overcast skies actually produce some of our strongest work because the light is soft, even, and incredibly flattering. If severe weather rolls in, we’ll reschedule, but a moody sky is something we actively look forward to.
