Michelle & Nick: A Summer Celebration at Black Swan MKE
Some couples just know how to throw a party. Michelle and Nick had the kind of energy that made everyone around them lighter, louder, and more themselves. Their Black Swan MKE summer wedding started with a reverent ceremony at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. From there it moved through golden-hour portraits along the Milwaukee Riverwalk and landed in one of the Third Ward’s most stunning reception spaces. Champagne towers, cotton candy machines, a groomsman in the bride’s dress. This day had personality to spare, and we loved every second behind the camera.
Cathedral Ceilings and Quiet Getting-Ready Moments
The morning set the tone. Nick and his groomsmen were in a hotel suite downtown, all suspenders and bow ties and easy laughter. One of our favorite frames from that room is Nick holding up his watch while a groomsman adjusts his vest behind him. It’s a small detail. But it tells you exactly who these guys are together.
Meanwhile, Michelle was across the hall with her bridesmaids. The moment she stepped into her dress the room just erupted. Tears, hands over mouths, the whole thing. Those reactions are impossible to stage, and honestly, that’s when we do our best work. Soft light poured through the hotel windows and gave us warm tones that carried right through the details: crystal-embellished heels on dark hardwood, calligraphy invitations, rings resting on textured linen.
Sacred Vows at the Cathedral of St. John
The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist is one of those spaces that makes you hold your breath. Soaring arched ceilings. Warm amber light filtering through stained glass. Organ pipes reaching toward the heavens. As photographers, we shot wide to let the architecture speak, then pulled in tight for the moments that mattered. The look on Nick’s face when Michelle appeared at the end of that long aisle. The way their hands found each other during the vows.
If you’re considering a ceremony here, know that the scale photographs beautifully. Warm stone and golden light do most of the heavy lifting. All we had to do was be ready.
Riverwalk Portraits and Wedding Party Chaos
After the ceremony, the whole crew hit the Milwaukee Riverwalk. That’s when the energy shifted from sacred to pure fun. The groomsmen piled into a beer hall and clinked steins. Bridesmaids posed along the river with Third Ward brick behind them. Michelle and Nick kissed in the middle of all of it, completely unfazed by the crowd. That shift from polished ceremony to late-afternoon party energy is something we live for.
For couple portraits, the Riverwalk gave us everything. Warm summer light bounced off the water. Red brick warehouses framed the background. Iron railings and green foliage added texture everywhere we turned. Michelle raised her bouquet over her head and laughed, and Nick just stood there grinning at her. Those candid, unscripted moments are the ones that end up on the wall.
The Black Swan MKE Reception
Walking into Black Swan MKE is an experience. Massive wood beams, iron railings, arched windows, chandeliers catching candlelight. The space has this incredible warmth that feels both industrial and elegant at the same time. Michelle and Nick leaned into it with ivory linens, greenery runners, and hand-lettered signage. Their “his, hers, and theirs” signature cocktail sign was a perfect touch. This is the kind of Black Swan MKE summer wedding photography Milwaukee couples book us for.
Then the party started. It did not let up. A groomsman showed up to the dance floor wearing the bride’s dress (yes, really). There was a cotton candy machine. Instead of a traditional cake cutting, Michelle and Nick poured blue sparkling wine down a champagne tower while the room roared. We pulled in close for all of it because those unfiltered reactions are where the real story lives.
A guest in a gold dress carried a platter of Italian pastries barefoot across the floor. Honestly, that single frame tells you everything about the vibe of this night.
This beautiful day was made possible by an incredible team of vendors:

What makes Black Swan MKE a great venue for wedding photography?
Black Swan MKE combines exposed wood beams, iron railings, arched windows, and vintage chandeliers into a space that feels warm and dramatic at the same time. The candlelit interior photographs beautifully without heavy additional lighting. Its Third Ward location also puts you steps from the Milwaukee Riverwalk, which gives couples a second backdrop for portraits without any travel time.
How do you approach a wedding day with a church ceremony and a separate reception venue?
Planning and communication are everything. We work closely with our couples to build a timeline that accounts for travel, portrait time, and buffer room so nobody feels rushed. On a day like Michelle and Nick’s, that meant mapping out time at the Cathedral, the Riverwalk, and Black Swan MKE so each location got the attention it deserved.
We’re planning a wedding in the Milwaukee area. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! We love working in the Milwaukee area. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
