Shauna & Justin’s Winter Wedding at the Wisconsin Historical Society

Shauna and Justin technically got married in 2020. But the party? That had to wait. So when we finally got to photograph their winter wedding at Historical Society in downtown Madison, the energy was unmistakable. This wasn’t a couple going through the motions of a celebration. These two had been counting the days, and every laugh, every glance across the room, every detail carried the weight of patience that had finally paid off. From golden hour portraits along the lakefront to a candlelit reception inside one of Madison’s most stunning historic buildings, this day was a victory lap. And we loved every second of shooting it.

The Kind of Couple Who Makes Our Job Easy

Here’s the thing about couples who’ve already been married for a year before the reception: they’re relaxed. Completely, genuinely relaxed. Shauna and Justin weren’t nervous. They weren’t overthinking poses or worrying about timelines. They were just happy to finally be celebrating with the people they love, and honestly, that is when we do our best work.

Justin showed up in a flat cap and classic suit with a white bow tie. Shauna’s lace gown had these beaded cap sleeves with delicate draped chains across the open back. The two of them together had this old-world, effortlessly cool vibe that we leaned into hard. Every frame felt natural because they were natural.

The detail shots set the tone early. Brown leather shoes on stone. A navy and white invitation suite laid out on dark gravel. Shauna’s sparkly heels next to ribbon and florals. Her lace dress hung on a weathered green door. Then there she was, sitting in a sunlit hotel room by the window, and the light was doing all the work for us. Those quiet moments before the day picks up speed are some of our favorites to capture.

Downtown Madison at Golden Hour

After getting ready, we took Shauna and Justin around downtown Madison for portraits. The light was incredible. Late afternoon sun pouring through the trees on campus, catching the stone facades of the buildings along the isthmus. If you’re considering a downtown Madison winter wedding, the lakefront and campus area offer some of the best backdrops in the state.

One of our favorite moments came on the terrace overlooking the lake. Shauna wrapped her arms around Justin from behind, both of them looking out at the water, completely still. The skyline softened behind them, and the warm golden light rimmed everything. We shot it tight and let the mood speak for itself. No posing needed.

From there, the two of them wandered the sidewalks near the Historical Society building. That classic stone architecture makes a gorgeous backdrop for portraits, and seeing them face to face with golden leaves scattered at their feet reminded us why we love shooting in this city so much. The anemone bouquet (white with those bold dark centers) popped beautifully against the stone and Shauna’s lace. A detail like that can elevate an entire gallery.

Inside the Wisconsin Historical Society

The reception space inside the Wisconsin Historical Society is something else. Tall white columns, marble staircases, globe pendant lights, and a bronze statue anchoring the main hall. It feels grand without being cold, and the warm lighting in the evening hours gave everything a rich, amber glow. Photographing a winter wedding at Historical Society means working with that amber interior light, and the results are absolutely worth it.

Heritage Catering set the tables with navy napkins, white florals, and gold-rimmed glassware. A two-tier cake topped with fresh anemones sat glowing by candlelight in the corner. String musicians played near the entrance as guests arrived. Every detail was intentional, and Wood Violet Events pulled it all together seamlessly.

For the first dance, we shot wide to show the scale of the room. Shauna and Justin slow-danced beneath the columns with that dramatic statue framed behind them. The globe lights cast soft circles of warmth across the marble floor. Then we pulled in close, because their expressions were everything. Foreheads together, smiling, completely present. That shift from big room to small moment is something we live for.

Later in the evening, we grabbed Shauna and Justin for a few portraits on the grand marble staircase. The overhead angles from the upper landing gave us these sweeping, cinematic frames. Then at the base of the stairs, bathed in warm light near the brass elevator doors, they kissed. It was quiet and unscripted, and it might be our favorite image from the whole night. If you’re planning a reception here, that staircase is an absolute must for portraits.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wisconsin Historical Society Weddings

What are the best portrait locations inside the Wisconsin Historical Society?

The grand marble staircase is a standout. It gives us dramatic, sweeping angles that feel cinematic, especially when we shoot from the upper landing. The main hall with its tall columns and globe pendant lights is also gorgeous for first dance and candid reception shots. Both spaces photograph beautifully in warm evening light.

Can we do outdoor portraits near the Wisconsin Historical Society?

Absolutely. The building sits right on the edge of campus in downtown Madison, which means you have the lakefront, tree-lined sidewalks, and classic stone architecture within a short walk. Golden hour portraits along the isthmus are some of our favorites to shoot in the city. The combination of indoor grandeur and outdoor urban scenery makes this venue incredibly versatile.
