Candid and Connected: A Family Workshop Family Session in Norway
Three kids, one mom, a blanket on the grass, and the kind of laughter you can’t stage. That’s how this family workshop family session started, and it only got better. We were in Strand, Norway for a photography workshop, and this family reminded us why we picked up a camera in the first place.
Fjords, Forest Paths, and Zero Posing
The landscape here did a lot of the heavy lifting. Green hillsides rolling down to the fjord. Narrow roads lined with wildflowers. Forest trails so lush they felt like tunnels. We shot wide to let the scenery breathe, then pulled in tight when the kids started doing their thing. Their thing was constant motion, which is exactly what we want.
We converted a handful of frames to black and white because the expressions were so good they didn’t need color to land. Sometimes stripping everything back to light and shadow is the move. These were some of those frames.
One of our favorite moments was the three kids walking ahead of us down a forest path toward the water. They weren’t looking back. They were just exploring. That kind of image, kids in their element with a fjord behind them, is something you can’t plan. You just have to be ready. If you’re considering family photography with us, this is the energy we chase.
The session ended with the four of them walking along a hillside road, the village and fjord stretched out below. Mom had her arms around the kids. Everyone was relaxed. The late summer light in Norway does this thing where it just hangs in the air, golden and soft. We could have kept shooting for another hour. That’s always a good sign.
Does Twig & Olive photograph family sessions outside of the United States?
We do. We’ve photographed families across the U.S. and internationally, including sessions in Norway, Australia, and beyond. If you’re planning something abroad, reach out and let’s talk about making it happen.
What makes a family photography workshop session different from a regular family session?
Workshop sessions happen during educational events where we’re teaching other photographers. The session itself feels the same for your family: relaxed, natural, and focused on you. The difference is the setting often puts us in incredible locations we might not otherwise shoot.
