Glamorous September Love: The Edgewater Hotel Wedding Photos
John and Michelle’s September day had this energy we could feel from the moment we walked in. Capri Suns with the bridesmaids, a string quartet tucked into the gardens at Paradise Park, and a lakeside reception at The Edgewater Hotel that felt like a completely different world by nightfall. These are the kind of Edgewater Hotel wedding photos that remind us why we love multi-venue days in Madison.
Getting Ready at The Edgewater
Morning started in the hotel suites, and honestly, both sides brought the fun. John was grinning while he worked on his bow tie, completely in the zone. Down the hall, Michelle’s bridesmaids were in matching sage robes, huddled around her laughing. Someone had brought Capri Suns spiked with 99 Bananas, and that told us everything we needed to know about the vibe for the rest of the day.
Every detail was polished but personal. White sneakers sat alongside strappy heels. A lush all-white bouquet with soft greenery. Rings on a woven textile that gave us rich, moody tones to work with. One of our favorite things about shooting at The Edgewater is that the suites have great natural light, and it makes these detail shots feel effortless.
A Garden Ceremony at Paradise Park
Paradise Park in Cottage Grove is one of those ceremony spots that doesn’t need much. Mature trees form a natural canopy over deep, layered gardens. White chairs lined the lawn, rustic wood crates with candles and greenery flanked the aisle, and white roses cascaded over the ceremony arch. Cherry Blossom Events nailed every detail out there.
Camerata String Quartet played as guests settled in, and the sound carried through the trees in a way that felt almost cinematic. We pulled back wide to capture the full scene, because when you have a bridal party that size framed against that much green, you want the viewer to feel the scale. Light filtering through the canopy gave us this warm, golden quality without being harsh. As a Madison WI wedding photographer, we don’t always get that lucky with September afternoons.
During the ceremony, John and Michelle shared a tea ceremony with their parents. It was quiet, intentional, and the expressions on everyone’s faces told the whole story. We stayed tight on that moment because it deserved the focus. If you’re considering Paradise Park for your own ceremony, know that the grounds photograph beautifully at almost any time of day, and there’s plenty of room for a large guest count.
Portraits in Golden Hour
After the ceremony, the bridal party was all energy. That big group shot where everyone crowds in for the kiss? Their idea, and we loved every second of it. Kids mugging for the camera, groomsmen cheering, bridesmaids waving bouquets. Those unscripted group moments are a photographer’s dream because nobody is thinking about the camera anymore.
Then we pulled John and Michelle away for portraits as the sun started dropping. Paradise Park has this wooded hillside with stone steps, and golden light was streaming through the trees at exactly the right angle. Michelle’s veil caught the breeze and billowed out behind her, and we barely had to direct a thing. A dog charm on her bouquet was another small detail that stopped us in our tracks. A little German Shepherd portrait tucked into the stems. Those personal touches are what make a gallery feel like it truly belongs to someone.
Lakeside Moments and The Edgewater Reception
That shift from garden ceremony to downtown lakeside reception is something we live for. Before heading inside, John and Michelle grabbed mini cupcakes and walked out onto the Edgewater’s pier. Lake Mendota stretched out behind them, flags snapping in the breeze, and the whole mood changed. Relaxed, happy, a little playful. That pier is one of our favorite spots in all of Madison for couples portraits, and the light right before sunset is unreal.
Inside, the ballroom was set with warm candlelight, wood table numbers, and a three-tier white cake covered in fresh flowers and a custom gold topper reading “John & Michelle.” A full tray of mini cupcakes sat alongside bottles of Dewar’s, which felt very on-brand for this couple. Our Edgewater Hotel wedding photos from the reception have this rich, amber warmth that comes from the room itself. Big windows, low chandeliers, and that dark wood. It all just works.
Their first dance was one of those moments where the room goes quiet and everyone leans in. Purple uplighting washed across the ballroom walls, and we shot it both in color and black and white because the emotion called for it. That black and white frame of John pulling Michelle in close is one of our favorites from the entire day.

What are the best photo spots at The Edgewater Hotel?
The private pier on Lake Mendota is hands down our favorite. Right before sunset, the light on the water gives you this gorgeous, warm backdrop that feels effortless. Inside, the ballroom has dark wood, low chandeliers, and big windows that create rich, moody tones for reception coverage. The surrounding downtown Madison architecture also gives us great options if you want variety.
How do you handle a wedding with two different venues?
Multi-venue days are something we genuinely enjoy. The key is building a timeline together ahead of time so there’s room for travel, portraits, and a few quiet moments between locations. Each venue brings its own energy, and that contrast makes the final gallery so much richer.
We’re planning a wedding in the Madison area. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! We love working in the Madison area. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
