B.J. & Katie’s Lakefront Private Residence Wedding in Junction City
Katie arrived by boat. Not a subtle entrance, not a quiet walk across the lawn. She pulled up to the dock in a speedboat, her dad helped her step out, and everyone on shore lost it. That moment set the tone for this entire lakefront private residence wedding, and honestly, it set the tone for one of our favorite days behind the camera. B.J. and Katie built every piece of this celebration from scratch on family land in Junction City, Wisconsin. Tall pines, a private lake, a hexagonal arch floating over the water. Nothing about this day was borrowed or rented from a venue playbook. It was all theirs.
Pine Trees, Pineapple Socks, and a Wooden Ring Box
The details at this wedding told you exactly who B.J. and Katie are. His navy suit hung on a custom hanger against a stack of birch logs. Pineapple socks sat next to brown leather shoes on the deck. Her earrings rested on a piece of bark. And the rings? Tucked inside a hand-carved wooden ring box that looked like a tiny tree stump sliced in half. These are the details we live for, not because they’re styled for a magazine, but because they’re personal. Every single piece had a reason behind it.
Their first look happened deep in the woods behind the house, surrounded by stacked firewood and dappled light filtering through the pines. The soft, even shade under those trees gave us beautiful, moody portraits without fighting harsh sunlight. B.J. stood with his back to Katie, and when he turned around, that grin said everything. From there, they held hands and just talked for a few minutes. No rush. No timeline pressure. That relaxed energy is something you only get at a private residence, and it made our job easy.
A Dock Ceremony on the Lake
Here’s what made the ceremony unforgettable. B.J. waited on the dock under a copper hexagonal arch draped in flowers, flanked by whiskey barrels. Katie’s boat pulled up, she climbed onto the dock, and the two of them exchanged vows with nothing behind them but water and a tree line stretching to the horizon. We shot wide to capture the full scene because the scale of it was stunning. A floating dock, open sky, the lake glassy and still. If you’re dreaming of a backyard lakefront wedding, this is the kind of setting that makes it worth doing it yourself.
Katie walked down the aisle on her dad’s arm, both of them beaming. The crowd sat in white chairs on the grass, close enough to hear every word over the water. And then there was the dog. Their goldendoodle wore a black bowtie and had full run of the dock before the ceremony started. We pulled in tight for that shot because a dog standing at the end of a dock in front of a hexagonal arch framing a lake is a frame you don’t get at a hotel ballroom. That image still makes us smile.
Speedboat Victory Laps and a Tent Full of Sparkle
After the ceremony, the entire wedding party loaded onto the boat for a victory lap across the lake. Sunglasses on, arms in the air, B.J. and Katie kissing at the helm while everyone behind them cheered. This is the kind of moment you can’t plan for in a shot list. It just happens, and you better be ready. We were in a second boat keeping pace, shooting fast and trusting the energy.
The reception happened under a white tent on the lawn, and the transformation was something else. Sequin tablecloths caught the glow of Edison bulbs strung overhead. Sunflower centerpieces sat next to rustic lanterns. Chalkboard signs pointed guests toward a guest log made from tree slices. That mix of sparkle and woodsy texture gave the whole space this warm, layered feel that we leaned into for every detail shot. By the time B.J. and Katie had their first dance, barefoot on the grass with string lights above them, the day had shifted from lakeside ceremony to full summer party. That shift is something we live for.
Late in the evening, the two of them changed into casual clothes, walked back to the dock, and jumped. Straight off the end, arms wide, with the hexagonal arch and the lake behind them. We shot it in black and white because it felt like the only honest way to capture that kind of joy. No posing, no direction from us. Just two people who threw their whole wedding at home and loved every second of it. If you’re considering a private residence lakefront wedding in Wisconsin, this is what it can look like when the setting is personal and the couple is all in. What makes a private residence a great setting for wedding photos?
A private home gives couples a comfort level that venues rarely match. Familiar surroundings help everyone relax, and relaxed people always look better on camera. Beyond that, personal landmarks like a favorite dock, a wooded path, or a backyard view become part of the story in a way that generic venue spaces simply cannot.
How do you include pets in wedding photography?
The key is keeping it low-stress for the animal and the timeline. A designated handler is a must so the pet can come and go without slowing things down. Short, focused moments work best, whether that’s walking down the aisle, sitting for a quick portrait, or just being part of the scene naturally. Some of our favorite images come from pets doing their own thing while we stay ready.
We’re planning a wedding in the Madison area. How can we see more of your work?
