Rachel & Dominic: A Fall Celebration at Monona Terrace

Rachel couldn’t stop laughing. The rooftop was drenched in golden hour light, Dominic had his arm around her, and the whole Madison skyline was glowing behind them. That’s the kind of moment that makes us love what we do. These Monona Terrace wedding photos came together on a warm October day that started with sacred vows at Our Lady Queen of Peace and ended with a packed dance floor inside one of the most iconic venues in the city.

Getting Ready and a First Look Under the Evergreens

Rachel got ready near a window, and the light on her off-the-shoulder gown was the kind of thing you don’t have to manufacture. It was just there. Across town, Dominic was all grins while a groomsman pinned a white and purple boutonniere to his lapel. Both rooms had that same feeling: calm on the surface, buzzing underneath.

For their first look, we found a spot beneath towering evergreens. Rachel tapped Dominic on the shoulder, and when he turned around, his whole face changed. We pulled in tight for that reaction because you only get it once. From there, the two of them were completely locked in. They walked hand in hand through dappled sunlight while fall color burned all around them. Honestly, that’s when we do our best work: when a couple forgets we’re there.

Stained Glass and Sacred Vows

Our Lady Queen of Peace is one of those churches that stops you in your tracks. Massive stained-glass panels in red, blue, and violet towered behind the altar, throwing color across the polished floor. We shot wide to take in the full scale of it because no crop could do that space justice. Every pew was full. The hush right before their vows, the organ swelling, the light shifting through the glass: it all hit at once, and we felt it behind the camera.

After the recessional, the whole wedding party spilled outside for group photos. Bridesmaids in royal blue clutched bouquets of white roses and purple accents. The groomsmen in gray suits kept everyone loose. One of our favorite frames from the entire day is the whole group erupting as Rachel and Dominic kissed on the grass. No posing required.

Portraits in the Autumn Light

Fall in Madison delivered everything we could have asked for. Red and gold maples framed Rachel and Dominic while soft, warm light filtered through the canopy like something out of a painting. Every few steps brought a new pocket of color, and we chased every one of them. If you’re considering an October wedding in downtown Madison, this is what the city gives you to work with.

As the sun dropped toward the skyline, we moved to the Monona Terrace rooftop. The couple walked, danced, and laughed against the full downtown panorama while lens flare spilled across our frames. That rooftop at golden hour is a photographer’s dream. Those Monona Terrace wedding photos are some of the most cinematic images in our wedding photography portfolio, and they happened in about fifteen minutes of perfect light.

A Monona Terrace Reception to Remember

Inside, the Frank Lloyd Wright architecture did what it always does: those curved walls and warm lighting create a feel you can’t replicate anywhere else. Rachel and Dominic layered their own personality on top of it. A hand-painted leaf tree served as the guest book, with “Rachel & Dominic, October 15th, 2022” lettered across the center. Tall centerpieces of hydrangeas, lilies, and snapdragons ran the length of the head table. The details were thoughtful without being overdone, which made them a joy to photograph.

The cake cutting might have been our favorite moment of the reception. Their three-tier white cake sat front and center, decorated with delicate blue sugar flowers. Rachel and Dominic sliced into it while guests cheered, and then the two of them broke into the kind of laughter that fills a room. That energy carried straight onto the dance floor. Their first dance was quiet and close, and then the party kicked in hard. That shift from tender to full-volume celebration is something we live for.

Frequently Asked Questions about Monona Terrace Weddings

What makes Monona Terrace a great venue for wedding photos?

Monona Terrace offers a rare combination of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and natural beauty. The rooftop terrace provides sweeping views of Lake Monona and the Madison skyline. Meanwhile, the curved interior spaces create elegant backdrops for reception images. That variety lets us deliver a gallery that feels both grand and intimate.

How do you handle a wedding with a separate church ceremony and reception venue?

Careful timeline planning makes all the difference. We work closely with each couple to build a schedule that accounts for travel between venues. That leaves plenty of room for portraits without the day feeling rushed. A first look before the ceremony is one of the best ways to maximize portrait time.

We’re planning a wedding in the Madison area. How can we see more of your work?
