Marissa & Isaac: Sky Bar Edgewater Hotel Photography at Sunset
A hand-painted oyster shell with their names on it. A driftwood signpost pointing to cities on three continents. Sand jar favors tagged with a place that clearly means the world to them. Marissa and Isaac’s Sky Bar Edgewater Hotel photography is full of those details, the kind you pick up and turn over in your hands because each one has a story behind it. We walked into this fall reception and immediately knew the gallery was going to have personality.
Details That Told Their Story
The Sky Bar at The Edgewater Hotel has these warm wood slat walls that give everything a rich, layered feel. Marissa and Isaac leaned all the way into that texture. Their driftwood signpost listed distances to Madison, Sydney, Stockholm, Durham, and nearby a gold-rimmed oyster shell displayed a hand-painted map of Cape Hatteras with their names and wedding date. We pulled in close on every one of those details because they weren’t filler. They were the story.
Small glass jars filled with sand and shells served as favors, each tagged “A little bit of Hatteras Island.” Florals mixed blush roses, rust dahlias, dried grasses, and pampas in warm autumn tones. Even the cake toppers were painted fantasy figurines instead of anything traditional. That kind of specificity is what separates a wedding that looks like a couple from one that looks like a venue package. If you’re considering The Edgewater for your own reception, take a page from these two and bring your personality with you. The space rewards it.
Family, Cake, and Quiet Moments
One of our favorite sequences from the evening happened between Marissa and her grandmother. Their embrace was so tender, and when they pulled back the joy on both of their faces said everything. We shot tight for that whole exchange because the background didn’t matter. The connection did. Those are the frames we think about weeks later.
From there, Marissa and Isaac cut the cake together, grinning at those figurine toppers like they were sharing an inside joke nobody else was in on. Guests milled between the terrace and the lounge while autumn light streaming through the windows kept everything soft. It was relaxed. It was intimate. Honestly, that energy is when we do our best work.
Golden Hour on the Lakefront
When the light started to drop, we pulled Marissa and Isaac outside. Fall foliage around The Edgewater was blazing in reds and oranges, and it paired perfectly with the warm tones of their florals and the shell garland they brought along. Against a wall of crimson leaves, they kissed, laughed, and held that garland between them like a banner. We shot wide to let the color do the talking, and it delivered.
Around the corner, old cream-colored brick and teal doorways gave us an entirely different feel. Moody, architectural, full of character. Isaac’s plaid tie and dark suit played off the autumn palette beautifully, and Marissa’s lace gown caught every bit of fading light. This is the kind of Sky Bar Edgewater Hotel photography that reminds us why fall weddings in Madison hit different. Everything is already golden before we even touch a frame.
Our final stretch took us down to the pier as the sun slipped behind the Capitol skyline. Lake Mendota turned to glass. Marissa and Isaac became silhouettes against the orange sky, standing together at the end of the dock. That moment needed no direction from us. We just let them be, and the light did the rest. Some frames you chase. That one simply arrived.
This beautiful day was made possible by an incredible team of vendors:
What makes The Sky Bar at The Edgewater a great venue for wedding reception photos?
The Sky Bar combines panoramic views of Lake Mendota with warm, textured interiors that photograph beautifully. Its terrace and pier are ideal for sunset portraits, and the lounge offers a cozy backdrop for reception details. It’s one of the most photogenic Madison lakeside wedding venues because of how much variety it packs into one location.
What is your advice for getting the best sunset photos on the lake?
Build time for it into your reception timeline. We work with our couples to plan a 15 to 20 minute window during golden hour so we can step outside together. Being flexible with the exact timing and trusting your photographer to read the light will give you stunning results.
We’re planning a wedding in the Madison area. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! We love working in the Madison area. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
