Cody & Bryan’s Joyful Ivy House Wedding

Some weddings you feel the second you walk in. Cody and Bryan’s The Ivy House wedding in Milwaukee was one of those. Ten years together, a June afternoon during Pride Month, and a room full of people who were so genuinely happy to be there that the energy hit us before we even unpacked our gear. Hugs everywhere. Laughter that carried through the walls. This is exactly the kind of day we hope for every time we show up to shoot.

Getting Ready at The Ivy House

The prep room at The Ivy House is the kind of space that makes our job easy. Warm light bounces off exposed brick, and the tones are gorgeous without us having to do a thing. Cody and Bryan got dressed side by side, tying each other’s ties, lacing up matching brown oxfords. Their vow books sat on a blue velvet settee next to a moody flat lay of stationery, rings in a green velvet box, and colorful florals. Every detail felt curated but never overdone. It felt like them.

Their wedding party was already buzzing by the time we turned our cameras that direction. Tan suits, sage green accents, and an energy that only comes from people who genuinely adore the couple they showed up for. The first look happened in the venue’s back room, and the reaction from their friends was pure, unscripted joy. We pulled in close for that moment because those wide-open faces are the kind of thing you can’t recreate.

Milwaukee Landmarks and a Red Lighthouse

Before the ceremony, we took the full crew out to the Milwaukee Pierhead Lighthouse and the Hoan Memorial Bridge. That red lighthouse against a bright blue sky is a photographer’s dream. Bold color, clean lines, zero clutter. We shot wide underneath the bridge too, using the steel beams as leading lines with the entire party framed right in the center. If you’re considering a Milwaukee wedding and want portraits that feel cinematic, these locations deliver every time.

Back at The Ivy House, we set up one of our favorite compositions of the day. The wedding party leaned out of second-story windows while Cody and Bryan stood below. Ivy crawled up the green brick facade around them. That image sums up the whole vibe: playful, a little theatrical, and completely their own. It’s the kind of shot where you know the couple trusted the process, and it shows.

An Outdoor Ceremony Full of Heart

The garden ceremony space at The Ivy House is stunning on its own. A wooden pergola draped in climbing flowers, lush greenery closing in from every side. Guests fanned themselves with custom “Bryan & Cody” flags while sunlight filtered through the trees. Their friend Kelli officiated, and the warmth she brought made everything feel intimate even with a packed crowd.

Cody and Bryan wrote their own vows, walking through their entire ten-year history. Bryan wiped away tears. Cody beamed. The guests erupted when they kissed, hands raised and cheering under the open sky. As they walked back up the aisle, sparkler wands waved on both sides. We stayed low and shot through the crowd for that recessional because the tunnel of light and noise was something we wanted you to feel when you see the image. It was loud, colorful, and absolutely electric.

Cocktail Hour and Reception Details

Cocktail hour spilled onto the patio, and the signature drink menu was a standout. The “Estle-hatten” and the “Morandi Mule” were spelled out on a hand-painted acrylic sign surrounded by deep red and orange florals. Guests sipped, mingled, and soaked up the late afternoon warmth. We love shooting cocktail hour because people forget we’re there, and that’s when the candid magic happens.

Inside, the reception was pure Ivy House magic. Trailing pothos and monstera hung from exposed beams overhead. Tables were set with terracotta plates, sage linen napkins, dark flatware, and amber bud vases holding moody arrangements. A neon “’Til Death” sign glowed against a dark wood backdrop. Industrial and romantic at once. The light in that room was rich and warm without a single harsh shadow, which gave us beautiful, even tones across every table detail shot.

Toasts, Tears, and a Toast-Giver on the Bench

The speeches at this reception were next level. Parents took the mic together. One pair cracked jokes. The other choked back tears. At one point, a groomsman in a white suit grabbed a guitar, belted out a song, then climbed onto a bench with his phone in the air like a rock star. The crowd absolutely lost it. We live for moments like that, the ones no timeline could predict.

Through all of it, Cody and Bryan sat at their head table holding hands, grinning at every story. They pulled loved ones in for long hugs between courses. Their coordinator Ashley from Midwestern Bride mentioned how special these two were to work with. Honestly, it showed in every frame we captured. Some couples are just easy to photograph because the love around them is so obvious. These two were that, from start to finish.

Dumpster Balloons, the Bridge, and the FERNWEH Wall

Some of our favorite photos from this Ivy House wedding photography session were completely unplanned. During portraits, we spotted a cluster of red and silver balloons across the street in a dumpster. Naturally, we grabbed them. Bryan kicked one mid-air while Cody doubled over laughing. The resulting images are easily among our top ten of the entire year. You can’t script that kind of thing. You just have to be ready.

The Milwaukee Bridge was important to Cody and Bryan because of its role in their story. Slipping away for a few quiet minutes near the water gave us something more tender. Foreheads together, hands clasped, the Hoan arching overhead. We pulled in tight for those frames because the intimacy deserved it. Back at the venue, the iconic FERNWEH wall delivered exactly the drama we hoped for. That German word means a deep longing for faraway places. It felt like a perfect match for two adventurous people starting a new chapter.

Sequin Outfit Change and Dancing into the Night

Just when we thought the night couldn’t get better, Cody and Bryan came back in matching sequin outfits for their first dance. The patio erupted. String lights and disco balls hung from the pergola while the couple twirled, dipped, and raised their arms in triumph under a deep blue twilight sky. That shift from polished ceremony to full-on party energy is something we live for, and these two nailed it.

Parent dances followed, each one full of laughter and quiet words only they could hear. From there, the dance floor never emptied. Guests in bold colors and sparkly accessories packed the outdoor patio, and the party rolled well into the night. It was the kind of ending that matched every other part of the day: joyful, loud, and completely full of love.

Cody and Bryan, thank you for trusting us with your story. This was one for the books, and getting to be part of it meant the world to our team. If you’re planning your own celebration, we’d love to chat. Check out our wedding photography portfolio or get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ivy House Weddings

What makes The Ivy House a great venue for wedding photos?

The Ivy House is incredible for photography because it blends industrial architecture with lush, living greenery. Skylights fill the interior with soft natural light, and cream city brick adds rich texture to every frame. Unique spots like the FERNWEH wall, the south-side alley, and the ivy-covered exterior give couples a huge range of backdrops without ever leaving the property.

What is your advice for couples who want their wedding to feel authentic?

Focus on what matters most to you as a couple. Write vows that tell your story. Choose portrait locations with personal meaning, and leave room for spontaneous moments. Some of the best photos from this wedding came from a random set of balloons we found across the street. A great planner can help you build a day that reflects your personality from start to finish.
