Love in Every Detail: San Diego Family Photos

Golden hour, a brand new baby, a big sister who could not stop grinning. This San Diego family photos session at Crest Canyon Park had the kind of light and energy we dream about. From the moment we met this family on the trail, we knew the evening was going to deliver.

Crest Canyon at Golden Hour

Crest Canyon sits on the edge of Del Mar, and at sunset the whole landscape goes warm and soft. The coastal bluffs, the layered trails, the way the light filters through the scrub brush. We shot wide to take it all in, then pulled in close when the quiet moments happened. That balance between place and people is what makes a location like Crest Canyon so rewarding to photograph.

This family had just welcomed their newest member, and their older daughter was all in. She wanted to hold the baby, kiss the baby, show us every rock she found along the trail. We leaned into that energy. Kids this age don’t need direction. They just need space to be themselves, and that’s when we do our best work.

One of our favorite frames from the evening is that big sister bending down to kiss her baby sibling on the quilt. Nobody asked her to do it. She just did, and we were ready. Those unscripted seconds are what end up on the wall. If you’re a family considering portraits in the San Diego area, a coastal canyon at dusk is hard to beat. The light does most of the heavy lifting, and the scenery gives you variety without having to drive between locations.

Dad got his moment too. Him and his daughter on that rocky bluff, silhouetted against the last bit of sky. Quiet, simple, real. That’s the stuff. Check out more of our family photography work to see what a session with us looks like.
