Holly & Stuart’s Rainy Winter Day: The Lageret Wedding Photos
Steady rain was falling when we pulled into Stoughton, and honestly, we couldn’t have been happier about it. Overcast skies soften everything. Colors get richer, light wraps instead of punches, and couples slow down just enough to actually be present. Holly and Stuart leaned into every bit of it, and these Lageret wedding photos are more romantic because of the weather, not in spite of it. The Lageret is already one of our favorite venues in the Madison area: historic brick, massive timber beams, candlelight that bounces off hardwood floors. Add a December rain and two people completely at ease with each other, and the whole gallery practically shot itself.
Details That Set the Tone
Before anyone walked down an aisle, the details told us exactly what kind of day this was going to be. Holly’s gown hung on a warm wood wall alongside deep burgundy bridesmaid dresses, and the contrast was striking. A wooden keepsake box, a delicate hair comb resting on dried ferns, rings nestled in eucalyptus leaves. Every piece felt intentional without being fussy. Flora by Jamae delivered a bridal bouquet packed with anemones, ranunculus, and deep reds that popped against the moody winter palette.
Stuart’s details had their own personality. Black dress shoes sat among pine and pinecones. His suit jacket hung against exposed brick with a bold pink floral tie peeking out. A photo of him and his dad was tucked into a patterned pocket square, and that small, quiet detail said more than any grand gesture could. Boutonnieres with berries and greenery rounded out the look. From there, we knew we were working with a couple who cared about the feel of their day as much as the look.
Candlelight, Brick, and a Room Full of Love
The ceremony space at The Lageret stopped us in our tracks. Candles lined the aisle and clustered around a vintage mirror draped in lush florals against that signature brick wall. Overhead, glass orbs hung from the heavy timber beams, catching the warm glow below. If you’re considering this venue for your own wedding, picture this: exposed brick in every direction, string lights overhead, and candlelight reflecting off original hardwood floors. It practically styles itself.
Holly and Stuart exchanged vows in front of a room that was completely locked in. The energy was warm and close, even in a space with soaring ceilings. Their first kiss was joyful, the kind where both of them were smiling too hard to make it perfect, and that made it better. The wedding party erupted when those two kissed, fists in the air, huge grins, the works. That shot of everyone celebrating around them is one of our favorites from the entire day. This is the kind of Lageret wedding Stoughton couples dream about, and it delivered on every level.
Rain Portraits Worth Every Drop
After the ceremony, we grabbed our clear umbrellas and stepped outside. Rainy day portraits are genuinely some of our favorite things to shoot. The light goes soft and even, wet pavement adds reflections, and the whole mood shifts to something quieter and more connected. Holly and Stuart didn’t hesitate. They were laughing, leaning into each other, completely unbothered by the weather. That kind of trust is when we do our best work.
The industrial buildings near The Lageret gave us gritty texture and faded signage as backdrops. Holly’s cream shawl and Stuart’s dark suit stood out beautifully against the muted tones. One close-up of her tucked into his chest with rain falling around them is the kind of frame we’ll be showing couples for years. Meanwhile, the bouquet shots against Stuart’s floral tie were pure color against a grey December sky. A photographer’s dream, honestly.
Reception Details and a First Dance to Remember
Back inside, the reception space was transformed. String lights draped across the ceiling, sage green linens covered the tables, and greenery hung from overhead installations. A neon “Make It Great” sign glowed against a living wall of foliage. The signature drink sign (his Old Fashioned, her French 75) sat among dried ferns and deep red florals. A photo display on industrial shelving showcased their story against that beautiful brick backdrop. Every corner had something worth photographing.
The place settings were thoughtful: black plates, matte black cutlery, sage runners, and handwritten name cards. Glass globe ornaments hung above long farm tables, and floral arrangements with anemones and berries lined the center. Craig’s Cake Shop created a textured white cake surrounded by a wild arrangement of flowers, topped with a gold “The Pawlaks” cake topper. An engraved cake server reading “Holly & Stuart, December 10, 2022” was the finishing touch.
The first dance was pure magic. Candlelight flickered behind them, brick walls framed every angle, and Stuart dipped Holly and spun her until her dress caught the air. We shot wide to let the venue breathe into those frames, then pulled in tight for the expressions. That shift from polished ceremony to uninhibited dance floor energy is something we live for, and Holly and Stuart delivered. What makes The Lageret a great venue for wedding photos?
The textures are what set it apart. Exposed brick, rustic wood beams, and massive windows that fill the space with natural light. Even on an overcast or rainy day, the interior glows with warmth. Indoor and outdoor options give us variety without needing to leave the property, and candlelight ceremonies here are absolutely stunning.
How do you handle rain on a wedding day?
Rain is genuinely one of our favorite conditions for portraits. Overcast skies create soft, even light that sunshine can’t replicate, and wet pavement adds reflections and a cinematic quality. We always come prepared with clear umbrellas and a plan, so couples can relax and enjoy the moment while we capture something truly unique.
