Britta & Curtis: A Summer Vineyard Wedding at Vernon Vineyards
Some venues just stop you in your tracks when you pull up. Vernon Vineyards in Viroqua is one of those places. Rolling hills, rows of grapevines catching warm wind, and a hilltop ceremony site that feels like it belongs in another country. Britta and Curtis brought their whole hearts to this June celebration, and our Vernon Vineyards wedding photography from their day is some of the most alive, light-filled work we’ve delivered all season.
Getting Ready Among the Vines
Britta’s details were laid out on this gorgeous slab of rustic blue wood, and honestly, we barely had to style a thing. Lace gown on a custom “Mrs. Everson” hanger. White heels. A cream rose bouquet with just enough texture. Curtis’s navy suit hanging nearby. Everything told you exactly what kind of day this was going to be.
The moment that got us, though, was Britta and her mom walking together through the vineyard before the ceremony. No posing. No prompts from us. Her mom reached down and adjusted the train. Britta laughed as the breeze caught her veil. We pulled in close for that stretch because those quiet, in-between beats are where the real feeling lives. That off-the-shoulder lace bodice caught light between the vine rows in a way that made every frame feel effortless.
An Outdoor Ceremony with Driftless Views
If you’re considering a Driftless Region wedding, picture this: a hilltop ceremony site with green hills rolling out in every direction, grapevines lining the slope below, and a wooden arch dressed in white and blush florals framing the couple. That is what Britta and Curtis stood in front of when they said their vows. We shot wide to capture the full scope of that landscape, because no crop could do it justice.
Three young boys stood near the welcome sign holding programs, grinning sideways at each other the entire time. That kind of detail tells you everything about the warmth of this family. An overcast sky kept the light soft and perfectly even across the lawn. No harsh shadows on faces, no one squinting into the sun. For us, that diffused light is a gift. It lets skin tones stay natural and expressions stay genuine, and we leaned into it for every frame of the service.
A Wedding Party That Brought the Energy
Navy suits, champagne satin bridesmaid dresses, armfuls of white roses, and absolute chaos in the best possible way. Curtis’s groomsmen were practically tackling him before we even got the group together. The bridesmaids matched that energy without hesitation. Everyone piled in tight, laughing and leaning on each other, and those unscripted pile-on moments always produce our favorite frames. We love a wedding party that does not need to be told to have fun. This crew had it covered.
Portraits in the Golden Light
Britta and Curtis gave us real time for portraits, and that generosity showed in every image. Early on, we worked near the ivy-covered buildings on the property. Curtis held her hand while the wind pulled at her veil, and the two of them had this quiet, settled happiness between them. No big dramatic poses. Just two people completely at ease. That is when we do our best work.
From there, we moved deeper into the vine rows. An overhead shot of the two of them lying in the grass with Britta’s veil fanned out around them became one of the standout images of the gallery. Later, a black-and-white frame of Britta wrapping her veil around Curtis captured the romance of this place perfectly. This Vernon Vineyards wedding photography session gave us some of our favorite portraits from the entire season, and that is not something we say lightly.
A Barn Reception with String Lights and Style
The reception inside Vernon Vineyards’ timber-frame barn hit a completely different note, and we loved the shift. Hundreds of string lights hung from the vaulted ceiling, casting warm amber light over white linens and navy napkins. Floral centerpieces in blush and ivory tied everything back to the ceremony palette. The head table sat in front of a rustic wooden staircase draped with greenery. It felt elegant and approachable at the same time, which is a hard balance to strike.
Britta and Curtis cut into a four-tier white cake topped with a gold “The Eversons” script topper, and the natural wood walls and stone accents behind them gave that moment a cozy, almost candlelit quality. We pulled in tight on their faces during the cut because that is where the real laughter happens. What makes Vernon Vineyards a great venue for wedding photos?
Vernon Vineyards sits on a hilltop in Wisconsin’s Driftless Region, surrounded by rows of grapevines and panoramic views of rolling countryside. Vine rows create natural leading lines for portraits, while the property’s timber-frame barn provides a warm, atmospheric setting for receptions. That combination of outdoor ceremony space and rustic interior means a wide variety of backdrops all in one location.
What is the best time of day for vineyard wedding photos?
Golden hour (the last hour or so before sunset) is ideal for vineyard portraits. Warm, low-angle light filters through the vine leaves and creates soft, romantic tones. That said, overcast afternoons work beautifully too. Diffused light eliminates harsh shadows and keeps skin tones natural across the entire frame.
We’re planning a wedding in the La Crosse area. How can we see more of your work?
