Alexandra & Jonathan: A Glamorous Fall Celebration at Whistling Straits
Some venues you walk into and immediately start planning shots in your head. Whistling Straits is one of those places. Golden prairie grass stretching in every direction, stone walls that feel centuries old, string lights glowing against a moody October sky. Alexandra and Jonathan’s Whistling Straits wedding photography gave us all of that and then some. These two brought deep emotion, effortless style, and a guest list that was ready to celebrate from the first look to the last dance.
Getting Ready in the Clubhouse
The Whistling Straits clubhouse is not your typical getting-ready space. Stone walls, warm wood, moody light. It felt like stepping into a manor house, and we leaned into that atmosphere with every detail shot. Alexandra’s gown hung from the slate overhang outside, and the soft morning light caught the fabric against all that rough stonework. We pulled in close for the flat lay of her shoes, rings, perfume, and invitation suite because those quiet details deserve their own moment before the day picks up speed.
Her bridesmaids showed up in matching botanical robes, and the room was immediately full of laughter and last-minute adjustments. Then came a moment that stopped us: Alexandra sitting alone, reading a handwritten letter. Her face held this perfect mix of joy and tenderness, and honestly, that is one of our favorite frames from the entire day. Meanwhile, across the grounds, Jonathan and his groomsmen were exactly the opposite energy: loud, supportive, and genuinely having the time of their lives. The contrast made both sides fun to shoot.
An Outdoor Ceremony Under the Pergola
We have a thing for ceremony settings that feel like they belong in another country. The timber pergola at Whistling Straits, draped in greenery and hung with string lights, does exactly that. Open sky beyond the beams, wind moving through the trees, guests filling rustic wooden pews on either side of a stone aisle. We shot wide to take in the full scope of it because a space like that deserves to be seen in its entirety.
Alexandra came down that aisle and the whole crowd shifted. Their vows were the kind that make strangers reach for tissues. When they kissed, the eruption from the guests was real and loud and joyful. From there, they walked back up the aisle together as the wedding party cheered around them. If you’re considering Whistling Straits for your own ceremony, picture this: that golden late-afternoon glow filtering through the pergola beams while the people you love most surround you. It’s as good as it sounds.
Portraits on the Kohler Grounds
After the ceremony, we took off across the property and just let the landscape lead. Tall prairie grass had turned golden and wild, which created this gorgeous contrast against Alexandra’s classic white gown and Jonathan’s black tuxedo. The overcast sky gave us soft, even light that wrapped around them beautifully. No harsh shadows, no squinting. Just two people in love standing in a landscape that looked like a painting. This is exactly why Whistling Straits wedding photography stands out: the variety on this property never runs out.
The stone clubhouse gave us a more architectural feel. Then we ducked beneath a vine-covered arbor for something quieter and more intimate. Jonathan kept cracking Alexandra up between frames, and those in-between laughs gave us some of our favorite images. Posed portraits are great, but the candid ones where someone is mid-laugh with their head thrown back? Those are the frames couples hang on their walls. That’s the kind of gallery we live for.
Reception Details and Dancing
The reception space matched the rest of the day: rich, warm, and cohesive without feeling overdone. Dark wood tables held emerald napkins, gold flatware, and tall glass vases filled with white florals and greenery. A champagne wall greeted guests near the entrance. Chandeliers hung from wooden beams overhead. Every detail felt like it belonged there, and we made sure to document the room before guests sat down because that kind of design work deserves its own spotlight.
Their cake was a simple three-tier white design topped with fresh eucalyptus, and they cut it together in front of a shiplap wall, grinning ear to ear. Once the music kicked in, the dance floor filled fast. Their first dance was slow and close and tender. The rest of the night? Pure celebration. We pulled in tight for the toasts and the parent dances because that is where the real emotion lives. As a Kohler wedding photographer team, we love when a reception carries the same heart as the ceremony. Alexandra and Jonathan’s absolutely did, start to finish.
This beautiful day was made possible by an incredible team of vendors:
What makes Whistling Straits a great venue for wedding photography?
Whistling Straits offers a rare combination of dramatic landscapes and refined architecture. The rugged, Irish-links-style course gives you sweeping views of Lake Michigan, golden prairie grass, and rolling terrain. Meanwhile, the stone clubhouse and timber pergola provide elegant, textured backdrops. That variety means your gallery will feel both grand and intimate without ever leaving the property.
What is the best advice for couples planning a wedding at Destination Kohler?
Work closely with the Destination Kohler event team early in the process. They know the property inside and out. They can help you build a timeline that accounts for travel between ceremony, portrait, and reception spaces. Prioritize portrait time around the hour before sunset. The golden light over Lake Michigan is extraordinary and creates some of the most beautiful photos of the day.
