Moments Like These: A Winter Sunset Family Session
February light in Wisconsin can go one of two ways. Either it’s flat and gray, or it drops low and turns everything gold. This winter sunset family session at Token Creek Park gave us the second version, and we ran with it.
Golden Light and a Baby Who Was Here for It
The grass was dormant, the trees were bare, and the light was doing all the heavy lifting. That’s the thing about winter sessions. There’s no foliage to compete with, no bright greens pulling your eye. It’s just the family, the sky, and whatever the sun decides to give you. We love that simplicity because it forces every frame to be about the people in it.
Their little guy was all in from the start. Laughing when Dad lifted him up, grinning on Mom’s lap, completely unfazed by the camera. That kind of energy is a gift. When a toddler is relaxed, the parents relax too, and that’s when we get the real stuff.
We shot wide across the field to let the warm tones stretch out, then pulled in tight for the close moments. The contrast between those two scales is something we always chase in family work. Big open landscapes make the intimate shots feel even more personal.
If you’re considering family photos in the DeForest area, Token Creek is worth putting on your list. The open fields catch sunset light beautifully, and there’s enough variety in the landscape to keep a gallery from feeling one-note. We’ve photographed families here across every season, and winter might honestly be our favorite.
When is the best time for family photos at Token Creek Park?
We recommend booking about an hour before sunset. The low angle of the sun creates warm, golden light across the open fields, especially in fall and winter when the trees are bare. That window is short, so we plan the session to make the most of it.
How do I book a family session with Twig & Olive?
Start by reaching out through our contact page. Tell us a bit about your family, where you’re thinking for the location, and what time of year works best. We’ll handle the rest from there.
