A Moody & Elegant Winter Wedding at Wisconsin Riverside Resort

Cranberry velvet, moody skies, and two people who could not stop smiling at each other. Ryan and Mariah’s winter wedding at Wisconsin Riverside Resort was one of those days where every single element felt like it belonged. The overcast November light softened everything it touched. The jewel tones they chose looked like they were pulled straight from the wooded hills around Richland Center. From a sacred ceremony at St. Mary’s to a candlelit reception dripping with personality, we felt the warmth in this one from the very first frame.

Getting Ready at the Resort

Wisconsin Riverside Resort spreads out across cabins and lodges tucked into the property, and that setup gave us something we really value on a wedding morning: separation. Both sides had their own space, their own energy. Mariah’s bridesmaids buttoned the intricate beading on her gown while she sat in a leather armchair, slipping on rose-gold heels. Across the grounds, Ryan tied his shoes on the cabin steps while his groomsmen gave him grief about his collar. Personal details were everywhere: photo charm lockets pinned to the bouquet stems, vintage Polaroids tucked into the groom’s tie, deep cranberry dresses hanging against a barn wall.

What stood out to us was the calm intensity of those early hours. Everyone moved with purpose, but there were also these quiet pauses that stopped us in our tracks. A deep breath before the veil went on. A handshake between brothers that turned into a bear hug. We pulled in close for those moments because they tell you everything about who these people are to each other. That energy set the tone for the entire day.

A Sacred Ceremony at St. Mary’s

St. Mary’s Catholic Church is a beautiful brick building with warm wood paneling and a softly lit altar, and the light inside gave us exactly what we needed. Ryan stood at the front with his groomsmen, head bowed, visibly emotional before Mariah even appeared. When she walked down that aisle, the whole room shifted. You could feel it. We shot wide to take in the full scope of the space, the stained glass casting colored light across the pews, the faces turning to watch her.

The ceremony itself was reverent and deeply personal. Their first kiss beneath the tall crucifix, flanked by cranberry and white florals, was one of those moments where the room holds its breath and then erupts. As they walked back up the aisle together, both beaming, the congregation let loose. That joyful energy carried straight into the evening, and honestly, it never let up.

Portraits in the Moody Winter Woods

After the ceremony, we headed to the wooded paths and open fields around the resort. The sky was heavy and overcast, and that kind of light is honestly a photographer’s dream. It wraps around faces, it softens skin, and it makes rich colors sing. Bare trees, damp earth, a winding gravel lane framed by evergreens. Every direction gave us layers of texture. Mariah wrapped herself in a cream shawl, and the contrast against Ryan’s black suit was stunning.

One of our favorite stretches of this winter wedding at Wisconsin Riverside happened when their two dogs joined in. The couple knelt on the grass near a barn while their pups leaned in for attention. It was chaotic and sweet and completely them. From there, we moved deeper into the woods for quieter, more intimate frames. They sat together on a fallen log, kissed beneath the pine canopy, and laughed so hard by the pond that we barely had to direct them. These two were completely relaxed, and that is when we do our best work. If you’re considering a winter wedding in this part of Wisconsin, know that these grounds deliver. The moody palette of the season does half the styling for you.

A Candlelit Reception Full of Personality

Back inside the resort, the reception space glowed. String lights draped across the ceiling. Candles lined long tables set with dark linens and gold chargers. Eucalyptus garlands framed the champagne bar. Every detail felt intentional but never fussy. A Milwaukee Bucks groom’s cake sat near the entrance, complete with knitted gnomes, and a live artist painted the couple’s portrait on an easel while guests mingled. The head table was especially gorgeous: tall taper candles, greenery runners, and “Mr. & Mrs.” letters in gold against a backdrop of hanging lights. We loved the way the warm tones of the room played against the cranberry in the florals and dresses. It all just worked.

Ryan and Mariah’s first dance was pure joy. He dipped her, she threw her head back laughing, and the room lost it. That shift from polished ceremony to late-night party energy is something we live for. By the end of the night, the dance floor was packed and both of them were grinning ear to ear. This cranberry and gold celebration was warm in every sense of the word, and it reminded us all over again why cold weather weddings hold so much magic.

Frequently Asked Questions about Wisconsin Riverside Resort Weddings

What are the best outdoor photo locations at Wisconsin Riverside Resort in the winter?

The resort is surrounded by wooded paths, open fields, and a winding gravel lane bordered by evergreens. All of these spots work beautifully in winter, especially on overcast days when soft, diffused light brings out rich tones in the landscape. The barn and riverside areas also provide great texture and variety for portraits.

How do you handle cold weather portraits during a winter wedding?

We move quickly and plan ahead. Before the wedding day, we scout locations and map out a route so we can get stunning images without keeping the couple outside too long. Warm layers like shawls, wraps, or fur stoles look gorgeous in photos and keep everyone comfortable. The moody winter light is honestly some of the most flattering we get all year.
