Golden Hour Vows: A Winter Beach Wedding at La Jolla by the Sea

There’s something about winter light on the Southern California coast that makes us want to shoot all day. The sun hangs low, the colors go warm and hazy, and everything feels like it’s moving at half speed. That was the energy when we showed up for Christina and Jeremy’s La Jolla beachfront winter wedding. Vows on the sand. A tropical-meets-boho reception under string lights. Salt air and golden hour and two people who could not stop grinning. This one had it all.

Getting Ready and a First Look Full of Laughter

Christina’s detail game was strong. Hand-drawn monstera leaves on the invitation suite, mint green heels tucked among succulents, crystal leaf earrings catching window light. Her gown hung from a wooden archway with pepper tree branches framing it on both sides. We pulled in close on all of it, because every single piece told you exactly who this bride was before she ever walked into the room.

Meanwhile, Jeremy was adjusting his watch and lacing his shoes in a mid-century courtyard nearby. Christina’s mom helped fasten the back of her beaded capelet gown, which caught light from every angle. Honestly, that dress was a photographer’s dream. From there, the couple met for a first look beside a round wooden portal door. Christina’s reaction was full-volume, contagious, doubled-over laughter. Not the quiet, teary first look you might expect. Pure joy. That energy carried them through the entire night, and it gave us some of our favorite frames of the day.

Vows on the Sand and Portraits Along the Coast

Before the ceremony, we pulled Christina and Jeremy into the hotel’s tropical gardens for portraits. Tile walkways, dense palms, Spanish-style balconies. Every turn gave us something different to work with, and we shot wide to let all that architecture and greenery breathe. Christina’s bouquet deserves its own mention: roses, protea, dried palm fans, deep amber accents. Wild and refined at the same time.

Then a City of San Diego fire truck pulled up nearby. Without missing a beat, Christina threw her bouquet in the air and they kissed in front of the bright red engine. Spontaneous moments like that are the ones we live for. You can’t plan them, and you can’t recreate them. You just have to be ready.

Guests gathered right on the beach, white chairs on the sand, a circular arch covered in palm fronds and neutral florals. Golden winter sunlight spilled across everything as Christina and Jeremy exchanged vows. Their officiant stood inside the arch, and that low late-afternoon light made the whole scene glow from the inside out. It was a La Jolla beachfront winter wedding at its absolute best. Salt air, golden hour, and two people completely locked in on each other. If you’re considering a beach ceremony in the San Diego area, this is the kind of setting that photographs beautifully without needing a single extra thing.

Golden Hour and a Tropical Evening Under the Lights

After the ceremony, we stole a few more minutes with Christina and Jeremy for golden hour portraits. Bird of paradise plants framed one of our favorite shots, and the fading light gave everything a hazy, cinematic warmth. Down near the boardwalk, the couple tucked into the foliage with the ocean visible behind them. Those quiet, unhurried moments always produce the most genuine images. No posing, no direction. Just two people being together while we stay out of the way.

Back at the reception, the vendor team had turned the hotel’s outdoor patio into something straight out of a design magazine. Long tables lined with bentwood chairs. Woven rattan placemats, pink glassware, gold flatware. Dried palm fans and pampas grass running down the center of each table. A boho lounge area with rattan furniture invited guests to settle in, and a “Positive Vibes” sign set the tone perfectly. The details were layered and warm, and our cameras loved every surface.

Christina and Jeremy cut into a two-tier blush cake topped with a dried palm leaf, grinning the same way they had been all day. As the sun dipped behind the Pacific, string lights came alive overhead. Their first dance unfolded on the patio while the sky turned orange and purple at the horizon. That shift from golden hour ceremony to warm evening reception under the lights is something we live for. The whole night felt effortless. Frequently Asked Questions about La Jolla by the Sea Weddings

What are the best portrait locations at La Jolla by the Sea?

This hotel offers an incredible variety of backdrops. Lush tropical gardens and Spanish-style tile walkways are perfect for intimate portraits. Meanwhile, the beachfront provides wide, open light during golden hour. In winter, the sun sits lower on the horizon, creating a softer, warmer glow that’s especially flattering for photos.

How do you handle a busy beach during a ceremony?

It’s a great question, and one we get often. By using longer lenses, we compress the background and focus entirely on the couple, blurring out distractions. We also guide couples to quieter angles and time certain portrait moments to avoid peak foot traffic on the sand.

We’re planning a wedding in the San Diego area. How can we see more of your work?
