Courtney & Matthew: A Fall Wedding at Oak Hill Farm
Courtney and Matthew had this effortless, fun-loving energy that set the tone before we even picked up a camera. Their fall wedding at Oak Hill Farm gave us everything: a historic white chapel ceremony, golden hour in the tallgrass, kids running wild under string lights, and a barn reception that turned into a full party. As Madison wedding photographers who love making the drive to Apple River, this is the kind of day that reminds us why we do this work.

Getting Ready in the Farmhouse
Oak Hill Farm’s getting-ready spaces have this warm, dark-wood character that photographs beautifully. Courtney’s gown was hanging against an antique hutch. The light filtering through the windows gave us rich, moody tones without any extra effort. Her mom helped her into the dress, and the two of them shared a quiet laugh over a personalized hanger. Those small moments are the ones we always gravitate toward.
Meanwhile, the detail flat lay came together naturally. A bouquet full of pampas grass, eucalyptus, and soft whites. Matthew’s navy suit and tan shoes hung against the barn’s weathered wood. The invitation suite sat on a windowsill next to succulents. Everything had texture and warmth, which is exactly what an autumn wedding at Oak Hill Farm delivers.
The Chapel, the First Look, and the Realest Moments
Their first look happened in the garden area near the barn, surrounded by flower pots and greenery. Matthew saw Courtney and just melted. She was grinning, he was trying to play it cool, and neither of them could stop laughing. That kind of unscripted emotion is a photographer’s dream. We stayed tight on their faces to let the reactions tell the story.
The ceremony took place inside Oak Hill Farm’s iconic white chapel. Honestly, that space is something special. Gothic arches at the altar, wooden pews, natural light pouring through tall windows. We shot from behind the groom as Courtney came down the aisle, then pulled wide to capture the full room during vows. The kiss and the joyful recessional were two of our favorite frames from the entire day.
After the ceremony, Courtney and Matthew gathered their boys for family photos on the chapel steps. The kids were wild, cracking up and tackling each other. The couple jumped right in. If you’re planning a family-centered celebration here, know that there’s no shortage of space for those big, chaotic group shots. Those end up being the ones everyone loves most.
Portraits from Pine Grove to Open Fields
One of our favorite things about Oak Hill Farm is the sheer variety of portrait locations on one property. The pine grove with string lights strung between the trunks gave us this enchanted, moody feel. Then we walked to the open pasture. Cows grazed in the background and rolling hills stretched out behind the couple. From there, a dirt path through a tree tunnel created a natural frame. Every backdrop felt completely different.
As the sky turned pink and orange, we pulled them into a field of dried sunflowers and tallgrass. Late September in Illinois is hard to beat for warm tones. The contrast of Courtney’s clean white gown against all that golden texture was stunning. These are the fall wedding Apple River IL portraits that make couples fall in love with this venue. The light did most of the heavy lifting. We just kept shooting.
A Barn Reception Worth Staying Late For
The reception pavilion at Oak Hill is bright, open, and full of character. A vintage carriage held the card box. The bar had a “Cheers” banner draped across it. Long farm tables sat next to round ones, all set with gold chargers and greenery. Clara Joyce Flowers brought the arrangements to life. Every detail felt intentional without being overdone. The whole room had this layered, collected look that gave our wider shots real depth.
Courtney and Matthew’s grand entrance brought the energy up immediately. Their wedding party surrounded them, bouquets in the air, everyone cheering. The first dance was sweet and unhurried. Just the two of them under string lights and a chandelier wrapped in greenery. Pizza Brutta kept everyone fed, Galena Roasters poured coffee all night, and an Udderly Delicious ice cream truck handled dessert. That shift from a tender first dance to a packed dance floor is something we live for. It’s the kind of night that keeps going, and we were glad to be there for all of it.

This beautiful day was made possible by an incredible team of vendors:
