Barefoot and Happy: A Family Fall Sunset Session
Shoes came off within the first five minutes and never went back on. That right there told us everything we needed to know about this family fall sunset session. Three boys, two parents who were completely game, and the kind of late-fall golden hour light that makes our job feel easy. We headed to one of our go-to Madison family portrait spots and let the evening unfold.

Golden Hour on a Dirt Path
We plan every outdoor family session around that last stretch of daylight. Fall sunsets in Madison come in low and fast, which gives us maybe forty minutes of really beautiful, warm light. Instead of fighting the clock, we lean into it. The urgency keeps everyone moving, and honestly, moving families make the best photos.

There’s something about bare feet that changes the whole energy of a session. People loosen up. Kids go wild. The connection between everyone becomes the thing we’re photographing, not how anyone looks. After two decades behind the camera, these are still the sessions that stick with us.

We pulled in close for the quiet moments between mom and her boys. Those little nose-to-nose exchanges, a toddler resting his head on her shoulder. Then we’d zoom back out for the chaos: boys sprinting down the trail, dad with a kid on his shoulders. That range is what a good family gallery looks like.

If you’re thinking about fall family photos in Madison, the golden hour window is short but so worth it. Kids grow fast. The palette shifts every week. And the combination of autumn color, bare feet, and that last warm light before winter hits is something we never get tired of photographing.

We snuck mom and dad away for a few frames on their own while the boys caught their breath. The tall grass, the fading light, just the two of them for a minute. Every family session needs at least a couple of those. It’s a small thing, but parents always tell us later those are the ones they frame.
When is the best time of year for a fall family session in Madison?
Late September through mid-October gives you the richest fall color, and the golden hour light is especially warm during that stretch. We schedule sessions about an hour before sunset to make the most of it.
