Sunset with the Whole Family: A Summer Maternity Session
Two girls running barefoot through coneflowers, a belly catching the last golden light, and a family of five about to become six. This summer sunset maternity session had the kind of energy you can’t plan for. The wildflowers were chest-high, the air was warm, and nobody was standing still for long.
Let the Kids Lead
We always start family maternity sessions with the full group. Kids burn bright and fast, so we get the together shots while everyone is still engaged. These two girls gave us everything: belly hugs, wildflower bouquets picked on the spot, big sister grins. Their little brother bounced between parents like a pinball. We stayed close, kept our shutter speed up, and let the chaos do its thing.
Once the kids drifted into their own little world, we shifted to the couple. That transition is one of our favorite parts of a session like this. The volume drops, the pace slows, and suddenly you’re working with two people who get to just be together for a few minutes. The contrast between family energy and quiet connection tells the whole story of where they are right now.
That Last Half Hour of Light
The light that evening was the kind you can’t replicate in a studio. Low, golden, wrapping around shoulders and flower stems alike. We shot wide to let the meadow breathe, then pulled in tight for the details: little hands clutching petals, foreheads pressed together, a belly silhouetted against the sun as it dropped below the tree line. A summer sunset maternity session like this one is the kind we think about for days after. If you’re considering Madison maternity photos with your whole crew, an open field at golden hour is hard to beat. Madison’s open meadows give us room to work and light that does most of the heavy lifting.
A family right on the edge of becoming more, soaking in the last light of a summer evening. That’s worth holding onto. Check out more of our maternity and newborn work to see what we mean.
When is the best time of day for a summer maternity session in Madison?
Golden hour gives you the warmest, most flattering light, and in summer that means starting about 90 minutes before sundown. We use the early part for family portraits while the kids still have energy, then transition to couple and solo maternity shots as the light softens.
Can I bring my other kids to a maternity session?
We love it when the whole family is part of the session. Starting with the group lets us capture that real, messy, beautiful family energy first. Once the kids are ready to explore on their own, we shift focus to the couple for quieter portraits. You end up with a gallery that shows the full picture of your family right now.
