Angela & Joshua: A Romantic Garden Wedding at Franciscan Gardens
Some weddings just hit you the second you walk in. Deep burgundy bougainvillea spilling over sun-warmed walls, golden California light doing all the heavy lifting, and a couple so completely locked into each other that everything else fell away. As a Franciscan Gardens wedding photographer, we felt it during our first walkthrough and it never let up. Angela and Joshua built this day around bold color, rich texture, and real emotion. The historic San Juan Capistrano setting gave all of it a place to land.
Getting Ready at the Inn at the Mission
Angela and Joshua got ready just steps from the ceremony at the Inn at the Mission San Juan Capistrano. The detail shooter in us was having a field day. Spanish colonial architecture, jasmine vines crawling up every surface, gorgeous tile work in every direction. Angela’s lace gown hung against a rough stone wall with banana leaves framing the train. It looked like a styled shoot we didn’t have to style. Joshua’s black tuxedo jacket resting on a trellis of white star jasmine had the same energy. Even the “Happily Ever After” clutch tucked into the flat lay had personality. Those textures were doing all the talking, so we shot everything tight.
The moment that stopped us in our tracks was Angela’s first look with her dad. He was trying so hard to keep it together. The second he turned around and saw her, tears came fast. He pulled her into the tightest hug we’ve seen in a long time. She handed him a personalized handkerchief with a handwritten note, and that sent them both over the edge. We pulled in close for that one. Those quiet, private moments before the ceremony are where the real stuff lives. They always hit different.
Portraits Among Historic Arches
For their first look together, we brought Angela and Joshua to the old mission ruins nearby. Weathered brick arches with the word “Resurgam” carved above the doorway created a frame we couldn’t have designed better ourselves. The second Angela locked eyes with Joshua, she got teary. He reached for her hand, steadied her, and they just stood there for a beat. That quiet pause gave us some of our favorite portraits of the entire day.
Bridal party portraits came next, and this crew brought the energy. Bridesmaids wore a gorgeous mix of dusty rose and deep burgundy gowns. Those rich tones paired perfectly with the pink hollyhocks climbing the mission walls. The groomsmen kept things sharp in dark suits, and we lined them up under the covered corridor with its exposed wood beams and crumbling adobe. That contrast between polished and rustic is a photographer’s playground. Every angle gave us something new. If you’re considering San Juan Capistrano for your wedding, the variety of backdrops within a short walk of Franciscan Gardens is unreal.
A Courtyard Ceremony Surrounded by Florals
The ceremony space at Franciscan Gardens was over the top in the best possible way. One stunning crystal chandelier hung from the center of a massive floral arch in deep reds, blush pinks, and creamy hydrangeas. It caught the soft afternoon light and scattered it across the courtyard. Ivy-covered walls enclosed the space on every side, creating an intimate garden room that felt both grand and personal. We shot wide to take in the full scope. No single detail could tell the story on its own. The whole picture together is what made it jaw-dropping.
Angela came down the aisle flanked by iron street lanterns and ground-level floral arrangements in every shade of wine and rose. Vows were emotional and unhurried. When the officiant pronounced them married, Joshua kissed Angela like nobody else existed. Guests erupted, raising their glasses for a cocktail hour toast right there in the same lush greenery. That seamless shift from tears to toasting carried straight into the night. We could feel the energy building.
An Evening Reception Under Chandeliers
Walking into the reception space felt like stepping onto a film set. Crystal globe chandeliers hung from dark wood pergola beams, wrapped in cascading florals and trailing amaranth. Pink-tinted wine glasses with gold rims sat on blush linens beside moody floral centerpieces. Every single table was layered with texture and warmth. Love & Luxury Events pulled the entire look together with incredible precision. Our job was to make sure every one of those details made it into the gallery. This is the kind of reception where you slow down and photograph the table before anyone sits.
As night fell, the garden transformed completely. String lights and the warm glow from chandeliers turned the space into something almost cinematic. Angela and Joshua shared their first dance on a white dance floor while guests watched from candlelit tables. Romantic, layered, and absolutely their style from start to finish. Being a Franciscan Gardens wedding photographer for this celebration reminded us why we love destination work. The light, the architecture, the way this couple trusted us to move freely through their day. All of it. What makes Franciscan Gardens a great venue for wedding photography?
Franciscan Gardens offers a rare combination of lush garden greenery, ivy-covered walls, and Spanish-style architecture. Its enclosed courtyard creates beautiful, even light throughout the afternoon. Natural textures give us a wide variety of backdrops within a small footprint. It’s one of Orange County’s most photogenic venues for romantic, detail-rich wedding photography.
Do you travel to California for destination weddings?
Absolutely. We handle all of our own travel logistics, and we love location scouting in new environments to find the best light and most interesting compositions. San Juan Capistrano’s historic architecture and warm golden light make it an especially rewarding place to photograph. We arrive the day before to walk the venue and plan our approach.
We’re planning a wedding in California. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! We love working in California. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
