Joy Looks Good on You: A California Family Session
Six people, a dirt trail, and golden hour light that made everything feel warm. That’s what we walked into for this California family session at Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego, and honestly, the energy never let up from the first frame.
Let Them Be Loud
This family didn’t need much direction. The kids were chasing each other before we even finished scouting the light, and the parents just let it happen. That’s our favorite thing. When a family shows up and actually acts like themselves, the photos practically take themselves.
We pulled in close for the quieter moments, too. Mom with her oldest daughter, leaning in and just being together. Her son tucked against her side like it was the most natural place in the world. Those are the frames that stop people mid-scroll years later.
We always carve out a few minutes for just the parents. No kids tugging at sleeves, no one asking for snacks. Just two people who built all of this together, remembering they still like each other. The light filtering through the brush gave us something soft and cinematic to work with, and they made it easy.
Then things got loud again. The group hug pile was pure chaos, and we shot through it fast because those laughs don’t last long. That’s the thing about family photography in San Diego (or anywhere, really): the best stuff happens in bursts. You have to be ready.
Mission Trails gave us everything. Dry golden hills, wooden fences catching the last light, wide open trails where we could let the family run. If you’re looking for family photos in the San Diego area, this park deserves a spot on your list. The landscape does so much of the work.
And then there’s this one. Sometimes a kid just owns the frame, and you let her. The hat, the skirt, the confidence. We barely had to say a word.
This is the kind of session we think about long after the gallery is delivered. Real people, real light, no overthinking it. We travel for sessions like this, and San Diego keeps calling us back.
Is Mission Trails Regional Park a good location for family photos?
It’s one of our favorites in the San Diego area. The trails, rolling hills, and wooden fences give you a range of backdrops without ever leaving the park. We recommend scheduling around golden hour for the best light on those open hillsides.
Does Twig & Olive travel for family sessions outside of Wisconsin?
We do. We photograph families across the country and have worked in California, Florida, the Pacific Northwest, and beyond. Reach out and tell us where you are. We’ll figure out the rest.
