Wild, Playful, and Perfect: A Golden Hour Desert Session
The light that evening was the kind you can’t plan for. Warm, low, and turning everything it touched to copper. This golden hour desert session with a family of six at Coconino National Forest in Sedona was one of those nights where the desert did most of the work and we just had to keep up.
Red Dirt, Red Rocks, Real Family
We tell every family the same thing before we start: just be yourselves. Play, chase, pile on top of each other. The more natural the interaction, the better the photos. This crew took that to heart. The kids were climbing, laughing, tackling Dad before we even found our first spot. We shot loose and let the chaos unfold, and it gave us some of our favorite frames from the whole trip.
Cathedral Rock in the background doesn’t hurt, either. We pulled wide for the landscape shots and let those formations anchor the frame. Then we came in close for the real stuff: a toddler on Dad’s shoulders, sisters leaning into each other without being asked, the kind of body language that can’t be directed. That contrast between the massive desert and these small, tender moments is what made this gallery sing.
If you’re considering Sedona for a family session, go at golden hour. The red rock turns almost electric in that last stretch of light, and the temperature finally drops enough that nobody’s wilting. We’ve shot in a lot of beautiful places, and Coconino at sunset is up there with the best of them.
The last few minutes of the session were just for Mom and Dad. The kids ran off, the light went soft and pink, and these two leaned into each other with Cathedral Rock rising behind them. We barely had to say a word. Honestly, that’s when we do our best work. Take a look at our family photography portfolio to see more sessions like this one.
When is the best time for family photos at Coconino National Forest in Sedona?
Golden hour, that last hour before sunset, is the sweet spot. The red rock formations glow in warm light, and the temperature cools down enough to keep everyone comfortable. We recommend scheduling your session about 90 minutes before sunset so we have time to explore multiple spots.
Does Twig & Olive photograph family sessions outside of Wisconsin?
We do. We travel for family sessions, and Sedona is one of our favorite locations to shoot. If you have a destination in mind, reach out and let’s talk about making it happen.
