Rich Color and Texture: A Jewel Tones Engagement Session
Deep burgundy against late-summer green. A rust dress catching golden hour light. Some couples show up to a session and the color story just writes itself. That’s exactly what happened with this jewel tones engagement session at the UW Arboretum in Madison. From the first frame, we knew the palette was going to carry every single image.
Why Jewel Tones Work So Well at the Arboretum
We have a thing for the Arboretum. The trails shift from open prairie to dense woodland in a few hundred yards, and that variety gives us completely different backdrops without ever getting in a car. For this session, the couple’s rich wardrobe colors played off the landscape in a way that felt almost painterly. Saturated jewel tones don’t compete with nature. They complement it, and the September light sealed the deal.
We shot this session in the last two hours before sunset, and the quality of light kept shifting as we moved through the trails. Open meadow gave us warm, diffused glow. The wooded paths filtered everything into soft directional light that we pulled in tight for the quieter, more intimate frames. If you’re considering an engagement session here, timing it for golden hour is the move.
One of our favorite moments was finding this fallen log along the water. The river behind them caught the last light, and the whole scene felt cinematic without any effort on our part. These two were completely relaxed, and honestly, that is when we do our best work. No stiff posing. Just the two of them, leaning into each other, letting the setting do the rest.
That last image might be our favorite from the gallery. We converted it to black and white because the emotion was the whole story. The laughter, the ease, the movement. Color is powerful, but sometimes stripping it away says more. If you’re looking for couple portraits that actually feel like the two of you, that’s always the goal.
When is the best time of year for engagement photos at the UW Arboretum?
Late summer through early fall is ideal. The Arboretum’s mix of prairie, woodland, and waterfront looks incredible during golden hour in September and October. Spring sessions work well too, especially once the wildflowers come in along the trails.
