Lush Gardens and Coastal Light: A St Augustine Portrait Session
Some couples just move well together. You can see it in the way they walk, the way one of them leans in without thinking about it. That’s exactly what we noticed within the first five minutes of this St Augustine portrait session at Washington Oaks Gardens State Park. These two were relaxed, connected, and completely themselves, and honestly, that’s when we do our best work.
Why Washington Oaks Keeps Pulling Us Back
We have a thing for locations that do the heavy lifting. Washington Oaks is one of those places. Every path turns into something new: formal garden beds, coastal scrub, ancient live oaks dripping with Spanish moss. The variety meant we never had to manufacture a backdrop. We just kept walking and the park kept giving us something better around every corner.
The light that evening was warm and low, filtering through the canopy in a way that made everything glow. We shot wide to let the landscape breathe, then pulled in tight for the quieter moments. That black and white frame where they’re forehead to forehead? That happened on its own. We just had to be ready.
If you’re considering St Augustine couples photography, this park should be on your list. The gardens give you structure and color, the trails give you something wilder, and the light at golden hour is as good as anything we’ve seen. It’s the kind of place where you don’t have to pose much. You just explore together, and the photos come naturally.
And then their dogs showed up. Two white pups, totally at home on the trail, and the energy shifted in the best way. The laughter got louder, the movement got looser, and we got some of our favorite frames of the whole evening. Sessions like this remind us why we love traveling for couples work. Every place, every pair, every session is its own thing.
Is Washington Oaks Gardens a good location for couples photos?
It’s one of the best we’ve worked with in Florida. The mix of formal gardens, coastal trails, and old-growth oaks gives you a huge range of backdrops in a single session. We recommend timing your visit for the last two hours before sunset when the light is warmest.
Do you travel to St. Augustine for portrait sessions?
We do. We photograph couples, engagements, and families all over the country. If you have a location in mind, reach out and let’s talk about making it happen.
