An Evening to Remember: Mama and Son in Amsterdam
Golden hour light, wildflowers, and a little boy who could not stop laughing. This mama and son session reminded us why we love what we do. The two of them were so locked in with each other that we barely had to direct anything. We just followed their lead and let the evening do the rest.
Wildflowers, Warm Light, and Zero Agenda
There was no shot list for this one. No timeline, no stress. Just a mama and her boy in a sun-soaked field on the outskirts of Amsterdam, doing what they do. He picked wildflowers and handed them to her. She kissed his cheeks. He sprinted down a fence line and she chased him. We shot it all.
The European summer light that evening was something else. It stayed soft and warm for what felt like forever, and the flat Dutch landscape stretched golden hour out in a way we rarely get back home. We shot wide to capture the full sweep of that field, then pulled in close for the moments between the two of them. That combination is where the magic lives.
Kids are unpredictable, and honestly, that’s the whole point. A spontaneous sprint, a belly laugh, a quiet lean into mama’s shoulder. Those unscripted flashes are always the frames that end up mattering most. This little guy gave us all of it, and his energy kept the session moving without a single dull moment.
Shooting internationally is something we never take for granted. Every location has its own rhythm, and Amsterdam’s is generous. If you’re considering family photos somewhere meaningful to you, whether it’s across town or across an ocean, we’d love to be the ones behind the camera.
Do you travel to Amsterdam or other international locations for family sessions?
We do. We’ve photographed families across Europe and beyond. International sessions work best when we can plan the timing around golden hour and scout a location that fits your family’s energy. Reach out and let’s talk about where you are.
What’s the best time of day for an outdoor family session with young kids?
About an hour or two before sunset is ideal. The light is soft and warm, kids tend to have good energy in the early evening, and there’s no harsh midday sun to fight. In summer, especially in northern Europe, that golden window lasts even longer.
