Bridget & Adam’s Summer Lakeside Wedding at Monona Terrace
Bridget laughed so hard during their first look that we could hear it echoing off the concrete walls downtown. That energy, completely free and unfiltered, set the tone for everything that followed. As Monona Terrace wedding photographers, we’ve shot a lot of celebrations on that rooftop. But when a couple is this relaxed and genuinely happy, it shows in every single frame.
Blue Velvet, White Roses, and a Whole Lot of Champagne
Adam and his groomsmen posted up in a lounge with deep blue velvet chairs, toasting champagne in gray suits while he buttoned up a sharp navy jacket. Meanwhile, Bridget’s bridesmaids were having their own moment across the hall. When she stepped into her lace gown, we caught a bridesmaid helping with the final button and the whole group reacting at the reveal. Both rooms had that mix of nerves and excitement that makes getting-ready coverage worth shooting.
Even the details told a story. A flat lay of white roses and fern with blush heels and heirloom pearls. Tan leather shoes resting on a polka dot tie. Floral stationery with soft watercolor roses. Everything was classic without being stuffy, and our camera loved all of it.
A First Look Under the Trees
Bridget and Adam chose a quiet patch of green near the terrace for their first look, tucked under low-hanging branches. Dappled light filtering through those leaves gave us soft, natural frames without fighting harsh midday sun. Adam’s face when she walked up was pure gold. He kept shaking his head like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing, and Bridget just grinned.
From there, we moved downtown for portraits with the Capitol as a backdrop. Groomsmen walked the street in formation. Bridesmaids in pale blue dresses cheered and posed near the square. One of our favorite shots came when the full wedding party crowded around Bridget and Adam for a candid kiss, everyone laughing and leaning in. That kind of energy is impossible to manufacture. Honestly, it’s what makes a gallery feel alive.
Vows on the Rooftop with Lake Monona Behind Them
If you’re considering a Monona Terrace wedding, picture this: a wooden hexagonal arch draped in greenery and white blooms, Lake Monona stretching out behind it, and summer clouds drifting overhead. That’s exactly what Bridget and Adam had. A rooftop ceremony that feels both intimate and grand at the same time.
Bridget came down the aisle on her father’s arm, both of them beaming. Wind caught her veil more than once, and we leaned into it because those imperfect moments always feel the most real. Their vows were personal and quiet enough that front-row guests were leaning in. We shot wide to capture the full scope of the terrace and the lake, then pulled in close for the kiss under that gorgeous arch.
Downtown Madison and Golden Hour
After the ceremony, we pulled Bridget and Adam away for a second round of portraits. Light was shifting into that warm golden phase, and downtown Madison delivered. On Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, we got the bride standing alone with the Capitol dome centered behind her, train pooling across the pavement. Then Adam stepped in, and they walked toward us with Bridget throwing one arm in the air. Those are the frames that remind us why we love this city.
Back on the terrace, the rooftop fountain became our next backdrop. Capitol dome peeked through the skyline while water cascaded behind them. This is the kind of work that Monona Terrace wedding photographers dream about. Every angle offers something different, and when the light cooperates, the results are effortless.
A Reception Full of Personal Touches
Inside, the reception space was warm and thoughtful. String lights draped across the ceiling, and floor-to-ceiling windows let fading lake light pour in. Bridget and Adam had included an “In Loving Memory” table with vintage wedding photos of family members. A quiet, beautiful detail we made sure to document. White and green centerpieces sat on every table, and the hexagonal arch from the ceremony had been moved inside behind the sweetheart table. That kind of continuity ties a whole day together visually.
Their cupcake tower with a vintage cake topper was a standout. When they cut into it, Bridget’s face said it all. Next came the bite-feeding moment where she was cracking up and Adam played it completely straight. We caught every second. That shift from polished and sentimental to loose and fun is something we live for behind the camera.
First Dance by the Windows
Tall glass windows behind them made every frame cinematic. Warm string lights reflected across the dark floor while Bridget and Adam slow-danced, then spun, then dipped. We barely had to direct anything during their first dance. Completely in the moment, they let the music carry them, and that’s when we do our best work. A final dip with the floral arch and Lake Monona glowing behind them gave us the kind of closing shot you hope for all day.

What are the best photo locations at Monona Terrace?
The rooftop terrace is stunning for ceremonies and portraits, with wide views of Lake Monona and the Madison skyline. Up on the upper level, the fountain works beautifully for couple portraits, especially at golden hour when the Capitol dome catches warm light in the background. We also love pulling couples into the wildflower gardens near the lake and heading to nearby downtown streets for urban portraits with the Capitol as a backdrop.
Can you have an outdoor ceremony at Monona Terrace?
Yes, and it’s one of the best rooftop ceremony settings in Madison. The terrace overlooks Lake Monona with plenty of space for seating and a ceremony arch. Summer weddings here benefit from long evening light and beautiful cloud coverage over the water. Keep in mind that weather backup plans are easy since the reception ballroom is right inside with floor-to-ceiling windows that still give you that lakefront feel.
We’re planning a wedding in the Madison area. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! We love working in the Madison area. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
