Running Wild: Moody Winter Skies Family
Overcast light changes everything. When we photographed this moody winter skies family session outside Lisbon, the clouds rolled low over the coastal hills of Oeiras, and the whole landscape went soft. No harsh shadows, no squinting, just this quiet, cinematic quality that wrapped around every frame. We love shooting in conditions like these because the light does half the work for us.

Let Them Run
This family brought exactly the kind of energy we hope for. The kids were wild in the best possible way, sprinting up hills, tackling each other, completely ignoring us. That’s the sweet spot. We kept our distance, shot long, and let the chaos unfold. The grassy hillsides of Oeiras gave them room to move, and we followed.

Then there were the quiet moments. Mom pulling the toddler close, the older kids sneaking in a hug when they thought no one was watching. We pulled in tight for those. The cool tones and muted greens in the background made every warm expression pop, and honestly, that contrast is a photographer’s gift. You can’t manufacture it. You just have to be ready when it shows up.

Shooting internationally adds something we can’t replicate at home. Families are slightly out of their routine, more present, more connected. The unfamiliar setting strips away the usual distractions, and what’s left is just them. That showed up in every frame from this session. If you’re considering a family session somewhere outside Madison, we’d love to talk about it.

Is Lisbon a good location for a family portrait session?
It’s one of our favorites. The coastal light, the green hillsides just outside the city, and the mix of old architecture and open landscape give us a range of backdrops in a single session. Overcast days are especially beautiful here because the light stays soft and even.
Do you travel internationally for family sessions?
We do. Whether it’s Europe, Australia, or somewhere closer to home, we love working with families wherever life takes them. Reach out and tell us where you’re headed.
