Bailey & Mitchell: A Cascade Iowa Summer Wedding Full of Heart
Soft blush roses, studded heels on dark wood, a bride’s mom squeezing her tight before the veil went on. Bailey and Mitchell’s Cascade Iowa summer wedding had our attention from the very first frame. Everything about the morning felt intentional and warm. The botanical invitation suite was laid out on cedar. Bridesmaids lined up in lavender tulle, laughing in the window light. That kind of energy tells us exactly what kind of day we’re about to have.
Sacred Vows at St. Matthias Church
St. Matthias Church in Cascade is the kind of space that makes you stop mid-step. Soaring Gothic architecture, ornate white altarpieces, warm light filtering through arched windows. If you’re considering a church ceremony in rural Iowa, this one is hard to beat. The scale alone gave us so much to work with. We shot wide from the back pews to capture just how grand the setting felt with every seat filled.
Bailey came down the aisle glowing. The ceremony had this reverent hush that never felt stiff. When they kissed at the altar with the ornate reredos behind them, the whole room exhaled. One of our favorite shots came right then. We pulled in tight on their faces, framed by candlelight and carved saints. That contrast between the intimate moment and the towering architecture is something we think about long after a wedding is over.
Portraits on the Iowa Countryside
After the ceremony, we headed into the surrounding countryside for portraits. Honestly, this is the part of a small town Iowa wedding that always surprises people. Weathered barns draped in Virginia creeper. Old grain silos towering over concrete walls. A metal outbuilding with a white garage door that caught the overcast light perfectly. None of it was planned as a “portrait location.” It was just the landscape around Cascade, and it gave us texture and scale that a studio never could.
Bailey’s veil caught the wind in front of that garage door and her gown billowed out behind her. Mitchell just stood there grinning. Those unscripted seconds are a photographer’s dream. We made sure to keep shooting through all of it. Later, we sat them on a pile of fallen logs at the tree line. The overcast sky wrapped everything in soft, even light. Their foreheads together, her hand on his face. Those quiet frames reminded us why we love portrait time so much. No rush. No audience. Just two people being completely themselves.
A Reception Worth Lingering In
The Cascade American Legion Hall was transformed for the reception. The details blew us away. Edison bulb chandeliers hung from the rafters, draped in greenery. A dark floral wall served as the backdrop for the head table. A script neon sign reading “the Brauellings” tied the whole thing together. Wooden farm tables, white draping, blush and mauve arrangements, candles everywhere. The room glowed.
If you’re planning a summer wedding in Cascade Iowa and wondering what the Legion Hall can look like dressed up, take a long look at these reception images. The bones of the space are simple. Bailey and Mitchell proved that the right vendor team can turn it into something truly stunning. Their cake table alone was worth a dozen frames: a naked cake topped in roses, surrounded by eucalyptus.
The first dance sealed it. Edison bulbs overhead, that neon sign glowing behind them, Bailey laughing with her head thrown back while Mitchell held her close. That shift from a sacred church ceremony to this warm, candlelit party is exactly the kind of energy we live for. It tells a full story in one day. The gallery reflects that range.

What makes rural Iowa such a great setting for wedding portraits?
The landscape around Cascade offers incredible variety within just a short drive. Weathered barns, vine-covered outbuildings, open fields, and towering grain silos all provide unique backdrops that feel authentic and visually striking. As Cascade IA wedding photographers, we love how the countryside delivers textures and tones that no styled backdrop can replicate.
Can you photograph a wedding with a church ceremony and a separate reception hall?
Absolutely. A two-location wedding day gives us a wonderful range of settings and moods. The key is building a timeline that accounts for travel and portrait time between the ceremony and reception. Bailey and Mitchell’s day is a perfect example of how a church-to-hall flow creates variety in the final gallery without feeling rushed.
We’re planning a wedding in the Madison area. How can we see more of your work?
Congratulations! We love working in the Madison area. For that reason, we encourage you to view our wedding photography portfolio. It showcases a wide range of celebrations, and we would be happy to share complete galleries that are relevant to your specific plans.
