Chasing the Light: A Rugged Coastal Family Session
Wind whipping through everyone’s hair, golden light catching the cliffs, two boys who could not stop laughing. This rugged coastal family session at Big Sur was the kind of evening where everything lined up. The Pacific was putting on a show, this family was completely in the moment, and we just kept shooting.
Wild Terrain, Real Moments
Big Sur is not a manicured backdrop. The terrain is steep, the wind is constant, and the scale of the coastline makes everyone feel small in the best way. That rawness is exactly what we want for a session like this. Nothing about these images feels posed or controlled. It’s a family being themselves on the edge of the Pacific, and we leaned into every bit of it.
That black and white of mom and her son still gets us. There’s no prompt that creates a moment like that. She said something, he cracked up, and we caught it. Those are the frames families come back to years later. Not the perfectly arranged lineup, but the in-between seconds that actually feel like their life.
We pulled mom away for a few solo frames on this trail, and the light was doing something we couldn’t have planned. Warm, directional, wrapping around the fabric of her dress. Sometimes a location just hands you the shot. If you’re considering family photography somewhere with real landscape, Big Sur is hard to beat.
We shot wide on the cliffs because the scale of this place deserves it. The ocean, the rocks, the drop. Then we pulled in tight for the quiet stuff: hands held, heads leaned together, the boys piled on top of each other. That range is what makes a Big Sur gallery feel complete.
That chase through the brush might be our favorite frame from the whole evening. Unscripted, messy, full of joy. We have been doing this for over two decades and destination sessions like this one still remind us why we love the work. No two locations bring the same energy, and no studio can replicate what the California coast gives you at golden hour.
When is the best time of day for family photos at Big Sur?
Golden hour, roughly an hour before sunset, is ideal. The light along the coast turns warm and directional, and the fog often lifts just enough to give you dramatic skies without harsh shadows. We always recommend timing your session around that window.
Does Twig & Olive travel for family sessions outside of Wisconsin?
We do. Destination family sessions are some of our favorite work. Whether it’s the California coast or somewhere else entirely, we’d love to hear what you have in mind. Reach out here and let’s start planning.
