Shades of Blue Session: North Mendota Wildlife Area

Every shade of blue this family wore played off the next, and against the green prairie grasses at North Mendota Wildlife Area, the whole palette just sang. This shades of blue session reminded us why we always tell families to think about wardrobe before they show up. When the colors click, every single frame benefits.

When the Wardrobe Does the Heavy Lifting

Coordinated doesn’t have to mean matching. This crew came in varying shades of blue, denim, and navy, and every combination photographed beautifully together. It’s the kind of detail that turns a good gallery into one you want stretched across an entire wall. We shot wide on the stone steps to capture the full group, then pulled in tight for the candid stuff.

That image of mom getting tackled by all three kids? That’s the one that ends up framed. Not the posed lineup, not the perfectly still smile. The full-body, can’t-breathe laughter. We keep sessions loose on purpose because those are the moments families actually want to remember. Our job is to stay ready.

North Mendota is one of our go-to spots for family photography in the Madison area. The tall prairie grasses give us texture and movement. The open sky gives us light that just keeps getting better as the evening goes on. There’s room for kids to sprint and plenty of variety in the terrain, all within a few minutes of the city. If you’re looking for a location that feels wild without a long drive, this is it.

Each kid got their own solo time in front of the camera, and their personalities showed up in full. The wicker chair gave us a great prop for the quieter portraits, and then the garden path let them just run. That contrast between still and wild is something we love building into a session. It gives the final gallery range.

The shoulder rides through the wildflowers might be our favorite frame from this evening. Golden light, genuine laughter, the whole family connected without a single direction from us. That’s the energy we chase in every session. When families relax and just play, we do our best work.
