Winter Wonderland: Arboretum Snowy Engagement Session

Fresh snow changes everything. It quiets the world down, softens every edge, and turns a familiar trail into something that feels brand new. That’s exactly what we walked into for this Arboretum snowy engagement session at the UW Arboretum in Madison. The snow was deep, the air was sharp, and these two could not stop laughing through every single frame.

Snow-Covered Trails at the Arboretum

We have a thing for winter sessions, and the Arboretum in February is one of the reasons why. The bare branches create this incredible web of lines overhead. Snow muffles every sound. The trails feel like they belong entirely to whoever is walking them. We shot wide on a few frames just to let the landscape do its thing, and the scale of it, the couple small against all that white, gave us some of our favorite compositions of the day.

Here’s the thing about cold weather sessions: when a couple is willing to brave it, the energy is different. There’s a giddiness to it. These two were constantly pulling each other closer, tossing snow, cracking up at the cold. We pulled in tight for a lot of those moments because that’s where the connection lives. The piggyback shot on the trail? That was completely unscripted. We just kept the shutter going.

If you’re considering an Arboretum snowy engagement session, do it. The quiet romance of winter portraits is something you cannot replicate any other time of year, and the UW Arboretum delivers one of the best backdrops in Madison for it. Layers, warm hats, and a willingness to let your nose get a little red go a long way. We’ll handle the rest. Take a look at more of our couples work to see what we mean.

It’s one of our favorites. The snow-covered trails and bare tree canopy create a clean, dramatic backdrop that photographs beautifully. We recommend scheduling for late morning or early afternoon when the soft winter light is at its best. Dress in layers, bring warm accessories, and lean into the season.
