Warm Light and Wildflowers: A Summer Sunset Maternity Session
Some evenings, the light just does something you can’t plan for. The sun drops low, everything turns gold, and every frame feels like it was handed to you. That’s exactly what happened during this summer sunset maternity session at Cherokee Marsh in Madison. The prairie grasses caught fire, the sky opened up, and these two made our job easy.
Why Cherokee Marsh at Golden Hour
We have a thing for this spot. Cherokee Marsh gives us wide open prairie, tall grasses, and scattered oaks that frame everything without competing for attention. During summer, the evening light here wraps around subjects in a way that feels almost cinematic. We timed this session so the sun would be low enough to backlight the grasses, and it paid off in every single shot.
What we love about maternity work is the in-between quality of it. Everything is about to change, and there’s this quiet anticipation that shows up in body language, in the way two people hold each other a little closer. These two had that energy in spades. Relaxed, connected, genuinely happy. That kind of ease is when we do our best work, because we’re not directing moments. We’re just catching them.
If you’re thinking about a sunset maternity session near Madison, Cherokee Marsh should be on your list. The landscape is gorgeous from late June through August, and the light during that last hour before sunset is unmatched. We pulled in close for the tender moments and shot wide when the landscape deserved to be part of the story. Both worked beautifully here. When is the best time for maternity photos at Cherokee Marsh?
Late June through August gives you the tallest prairie grasses and the best golden hour light. We recommend booking your session about 90 minutes before sunset so we can use that warm, low light for the majority of the shoot.
How far in advance should I book a maternity session with Twig & Olive?
We recommend reaching out during your second trimester so we can plan for the ideal window, usually around 30 to 34 weeks. Summer evenings fill up quickly, so earlier is better. Contact us here to get started.
