From Wedding to Maternity: A UW Arboretum Session
We first photographed this couple on their wedding day. When they reached out about a maternity session, we didn’t hesitate. As a Madison Wisconsin maternity photographer, there’s no better feeling than watching a couple you already love step into a brand new chapter. The UW Arboretum in February is quiet, stripped back, and surprisingly beautiful. It gave us exactly the kind of space this session needed.
Winter Light and a Whole Lot of Trust
The Arboretum in winter doesn’t give you wildflower prairies or canopy shade. What it gives you is structure: bare branches, soft gray sky, and diffused light that wraps around everything evenly. We leaned into that. No harsh shadows, no fighting the sun. Just clean, open frames with all the focus on the two of them.
When you’ve already spent a wedding day with a couple, you skip the getting-to-know-you phase entirely. They knew our rhythm. We knew theirs. That kind of comfort shows up in the images. Shoulders relax. Smiles come easy. Nobody is thinking about where to put their hands. This is the kind of maternity session we live for, the ones where people just get to be themselves.
If you’re considering the UW Arboretum for maternity portraits, don’t overlook winter. The trails are empty, the light is forgiving, and the stillness feels exactly right for this stage of life. We pulled in tight for the quieter moments and shot wide when the path stretched out ahead. Being a Madison Wisconsin maternity photographer means we know these trails in every season. Honestly, February might be our favorite.
Is the UW Arboretum a good spot for winter maternity photos?
It really is. Winter strips the landscape down to its bones, and the diffused light is incredibly flattering for maternity portraits. The trails are quiet, parking is easy, and the variety of backdrops (open prairies, wooded paths, and clearings) gives us plenty to work with even without greenery.
How do I book a maternity session with Twig & Olive?
Just reach out through our contact page and tell us a little about your timeline and any locations you love. We typically recommend scheduling between 28 and 36 weeks, but every pregnancy is different. We’ll find the right window together.
