Mikayla & Ben: Memorial Union Wedding Photography in Madison
Some weddings just hit different. Mikayla and Ben gave us colorful Terrace chairs, a Bucky Badger entrance, and the kind of laughter that makes everyone in the room lean in. Their Memorial Union wedding photography session was peak downtown Madison: historic stone, Lake Mendota light, and a wedding party that never once needed coaxing to have fun. Honestly, this is the kind of day we think about when someone asks why we love what we do.
Getting Ready at the Great Hall
The prep rooms just off the Memorial Union Great Hall gave us a gorgeous start. Deep burgundy heels on a wooden ledge near the window. Cream and wine-toned blooms catching soft light against an old mirror. Every detail had weight and warmth, and we leaned into the natural light to let those textures do the talking. Across the hall, Ben’s groomsman was helping him with his tie while the guys shared a quiet toast. Those calm, unstaged moments always end up being some of our favorites in a gallery.
Then came Mikayla’s bridal portraits outside the Union, and this is where the day really started to sing for us. That ornate stone facade has a timeless, almost European quality, and we shot wide to let the architecture frame her. A gust of wind caught her tulle skirt at exactly the right second. Her mom stood close the entire time, and the tenderness between them was the kind of thing you don’t direct. You just stay ready.
Ceremony in the Great Hall
The Great Hall delivered. Tall windows lining both walls flooded the room with soft, even light, and a hexagonal arch draped with florals framed Mikayla and Ben perfectly. We pulled in close for the vows because that’s where the real emotion lives, and this ceremony had plenty of it. Mikayla came down the aisle on her father’s arm, absolutely beaming, and you could feel the room respond.
Their officiant kept things personal and unhurried, which set a beautiful tone. But the moment that stopped us was the kiss. Ben dipped Mikayla, and the entire room erupted. That kind of spontaneous, full-volume joy is something we live for. You can’t manufacture it, and you can’t recreate it. All you can do is be in position when it happens.
Lakeside Portraits and Wedding Party Fun
After the ceremony, we headed straight for the water. The bridesmaids walked arm in arm along the waterfront while the groomsmen jumped off the Hoofers dock in matching navy suits. That energy is contagious behind the camera, and it carried right into the couple’s portraits. Between the sailboats, the stone columns, and the lush tropical planters on the Terrace, every turn gave us a completely different frame. This venue is a photographer’s playground, full stop.
Overcast skies kept the light soft and even all afternoon. No harsh shadows, no squinting. It’s the kind of light we quietly hope for on portrait days. From the waterfront, we moved to a walkway near the campus clock tower, then circled back to the Terrace for an overhead shot framed by giant green leaves. If you’re considering a downtown Madison celebration, know that this venue gives you a dozen distinct looks without ever leaving the property. These are the kinds of photos that feel unmistakably Wisconsin.
A Reception Worth Remembering
Back inside the Great Hall, Mikayla and Ben’s reception was layered with personal touches. Hexagonal table number holders, a Polaroid guest book, a custom wooden welcome sign. Over in a window nook, the cake from Bloom Bake Shop practically glowed in late afternoon light, and we grabbed that shot before anyone touched it because some moments are fleeting.
Their grand entrance might be the best we’ve ever photographed. Bucky Badger burst through the doors, and the crowd absolutely lost it. Mikayla and Ben were waving and laughing before they even reached the dance floor. The first dance was tender and unhurried, a calm reset before the party shifted into high gear. That swing from sweet to chaotic is something we love capturing because it tells the full story of who a couple really is. By the end of the night, the two of them posed in front of a lush flower wall with a neon sign reading “The Lingemanns,” and honestly, that frame says it all.
This day reminded us why Memorial Union wedding photography holds such a special place in our work. Few venues in Wisconsin bring this much history, personality, and natural beauty together under one roof. If you’re dreaming about your own celebration here, we’d love to hear about it. What makes the Memorial Union a great venue for wedding photography?
The Memorial Union offers a rare mix of grand indoor architecture and relaxed lakeside scenery, all in one location. Inside, the Great Hall provides tall ceilings, ornate columns, and beautiful window light for ceremonies and receptions. Outside, the iconic Terrace and Hoofers dock give couples colorful, vibrant backdrops with views of Lake Mendota. Few downtown Madison wedding venues deliver this kind of variety within walking distance.
How should we plan our wedding day timeline at a large university venue?
Build extra time for portraits. A venue like the Memorial Union has dozens of beautiful spots, from stone archways to lakeside docks, and a well-paced timeline lets you explore them without stress. We also recommend embracing the public energy of the Terrace. Colorful chairs and the buzz of campus life make for photos that feel alive and uniquely Madison.
