Perfectly Imperfect: A Summer Wetland Family Session
Golden hour hit and this family just went for it. The boys were picking wildflowers, mom was laughing, and dad was right there in the middle of all of it. That’s exactly the kind of energy we hope for when we photograph a summer wetland family session at Cherokee Marsh Conservation Park in Madison.
Playful, Honest, and Yours
Cherokee Marsh has this beautiful mix of open prairie, wooded trails, and tall grasses that catch the light in the most incredible way during late summer. We shot wide on the trails to pull all of that texture in, then moved in close when the real moments started happening. A toddler crouching over wildflowers. Brothers leaning into each other without anyone telling them to. Those are the frames that end up on the wall.
If you’re considering Cherokee Marsh family photography in Madison, the trails here give us so many options. Shaded canopy for soft light, open meadow for that warm golden glow, and enough room for kids to run without worrying about where the edge of the frame is. We love that kind of flexibility.
Family photos are not about everyone looking at the camera and smiling at the same time. They’re about the messy, loud, tender stuff that actually makes your family yours. We tell every family the same thing: play, laugh, tickle, chase. Our job is to be ready when those moments land.
One of our favorite frames from this evening is the black and white of everyone laughing on the trail. Nobody was looking at us. The boys were being tickled, the parents were cracking up, and we pulled the trigger. That’s the kind of image that stops you ten years from now. We have a thing for those unscripted, in-between seconds, and this family gave us plenty of them.
We also grabbed a handful of couple portraits at the end while the light was fading into something warm and amber. Those quiet moments between parents, after the kids have worn themselves out, are some of our favorites to capture. Check out our family photography portfolio to see more of what we do.
When is the best time of year for family photos at Cherokee Marsh?
Late summer and early fall are ideal. The tall grasses and wildflowers are at their peak, and the golden-hour light along the trails is incredible. We typically recommend booking about 90 minutes before sunset for the best conditions.
