Laughter and Golden Hour: A Sunset Family Adventure Session
These two boys had zero interest in standing still, and honestly, that’s exactly what made this sunset family adventure session one of our all-time favorites. We met this family at Yosemite National Park in the late afternoon, when the light was already turning gold and the valley felt like it belonged in a different century. Granite walls, towering pines, and two kids ready to climb everything in sight. Our kind of session.
Let Them Lead
We talk a lot about letting kids be kids during family sessions. At Yosemite, that philosophy writes itself. There are boulders to scale, meadows to bolt through, and streams to crouch beside with absolute focus. The boys led the way and we followed, pulling frames as the moments unfolded. No stiff posing, no countdowns. Just a family moving through one of the most stunning landscapes on the planet.
The light in Yosemite Valley during golden hour is something we think about long after a session ends. It bounces off the granite walls and fills the whole space with this warm, ambient glow. We barely had to direct anything. The light wrapped around this family in a way that felt almost cinematic, and every few steps gave us a completely different composition. That’s a photographer’s dream, and we leaned into it hard.
Between the couple’s quiet moments together and the boys’ nonstop energy, the range in this gallery tells a full story. One frame is nose-to-nose tenderness on a rocky trail. The next is two brothers with their arms slung around each other, grinning like they just got away with something. A place like Yosemite adds weight to images like these. Years from now, they won’t just remember who they were. They’ll remember where they were together.
If you’re thinking about doing a family session somewhere that takes your breath away, this is what it looks like when the location matches the energy. We travel for sessions like this and would love to plan something with your crew. Take a look at our family photography portfolio to see more of our work.
When is the best time of day for family photos at Yosemite?
Late afternoon into golden hour gives you the best light in the valley. The sun drops behind the granite walls and fills the space with a warm, even glow that’s perfect for portraits. We always recommend timing your session around that window.
Does Twig & Olive travel for family sessions outside of Wisconsin?
We do. National parks, beach towns, mountain trails, wherever your family feels most at home. Reach out and tell us where you’re headed, and we’ll work out the details.
