Joy Looks Good on You: A Mother Son Session at Yosemite
Some sessions stick with you. Not because everything was perfect, but because the people in front of the camera made it impossible not to smile. This mother son session at Yosemite National Park was one of those. Just a mom, her boy, a river, and the kind of light that makes our job feel effortless.
When Kids Just Get to Be Kids
We always tell families the same thing: forget we’re here. Play. Laugh. Chase each other. The moment you stop performing for the camera is the moment we start getting the real stuff. And these two? They didn’t need any convincing. This little guy was all energy, all giggles, all personality from the first frame.
We shot this session along the Merced River with El Capitan and Yosemite Falls rising behind them. That backdrop is almost unfair. The scale of those granite walls next to these quiet, tender moments between a mother and her son created something we couldn’t have planned. We pulled in tight for the close moments and went wide when the landscape demanded it.
Family photos are not about getting everyone to sit still and look perfect. They’re about connection. The shoulder rides, the nose-to-nose moments, the kid tumbling into mom’s lap while she’s laughing so hard she can barely hold on. That is what we’re after, and that is exactly what we got.

Is Yosemite National Park a good location for a family photo session?
It’s one of our favorites. The combination of the Merced River, granite cliffs, and pine forests gives you variety without ever needing to leave the valley. Late afternoon light works especially well along the river, and kids have plenty of space to move and explore while we photograph naturally.
Do you travel to Northern California for family sessions?
