Spring Blooms Newborn Session: Magnolias, Daffodils, and a Brand New Baby

The magnolias had maybe a week left. We knew it the second we pulled into the UW Arboretum parking lot, saw the blossoms heavy on every branch, and thought: this is the window. This family of five showed up for their spring blooms newborn session right in the middle of it, and honestly, the timing could not have been better.

Late May at the Arboretum Hits Different

We’ve shot here dozens of times across every season. But there’s a stretch in late May when the magnolias are fully open and the daffodils are still holding on, and that overlap lasts about a week. This family landed right in it. White and pink blossoms overhead, yellow blooms at our feet. Ten steps in any direction gave us a completely different frame without changing a single setting on the camera.

Outdoor newborn sessions make some parents nervous. We get that. But this crew trusted the process completely, and that trust gave us room to work. The older kids chased each other between frames. Mom and Dad held the baby close and let everything else unfold. Those unscripted stretches are where the real stuff lives. A sibling leaning in to whisper something to the baby. Dad cracking up at something the toddler said. We pulled in tight for those moments and let the blooms go soft behind them.

And then there was this little one. Sound asleep the entire session. We tucked her into a wicker basket among the daffodils and she never flinched. The yellow blooms surrounding the basket, the soft brown swaddle, the tiny floral headband. Nature did most of the decorating, and we just had to frame it. That kind of calm from a newborn is a gift, and we took full advantage of every quiet second.

If you’re thinking about outdoor newborn portraits in the Madison area, the Arboretum is hard to beat. The paths are easy, the scenery shifts with the seasons, and there’s a softness to the light under those tree canopies that we just cannot replicate in a studio. It’s one of the reasons we keep coming back. You can see more of our outdoor and studio work on our newborn and maternity photography page.

Frequently Asked Questions about Newborn Sessions at UW Arboretum

When is the best time for an outdoor newborn session at UW Arboretum?

Late May is our favorite window. The magnolias and daffodils overlap for about a week, and the light filtering through the canopy is warm without being harsh. Early fall works beautifully too, but spring gives newborn photos a softness that’s tough to match anywhere else in Madison.
