Kathryn & Matt’s Vintage Glam Summer Wedding at the Memorial Union

A birdcage veil, a handwritten sonnet, and custom bobblehead cake toppers. That’s a lot of personality before you even get to the ceremony. Kathryn and Matt’s vintage glam summer wedding at Madison’s Memorial Union was one of those days where every detail told us exactly who these two are. When a couple commits to a vision that hard, our job gets really fun.

Getting Ready with All the Right Details

Kathryn’s bridal details were spread across the hotel room like a mood board come to life. A sleek satin gown by the window. Strappy nude heels. A colorful bouquet of peonies and sweet peas. A vintage-style clutch and pearl photo charms pinned to ribbon. Every piece had intention behind it, and together they gave us a flat lay that practically styled itself.

The thing that stopped us, though, was a handkerchief with handwritten notes tucked in among the details. Small, deeply personal. The camera catches the emotion in those tiny objects better than most people expect. It set the tone for everything that came after.

Portraits Under the Painted Arches

After a first look, we brought Kathryn and Matt into the arched loggia at the Memorial Union. If you’ve never been in that space on a golden afternoon, picture this: ornate green and cream paint on the ceiling, wrought iron lanterns overhead, warm light pouring in from every angle. We barely had to direct. The light did the heavy lifting, and these two just lived in it. Kathryn’s birdcage veil gave every frame a gorgeous retro quality.

The wedding party brought pure energy. Bridesmaids in black gowns carried wildly colorful bouquets that popped against the stone columns. Groomsmen matched in classic black tuxedos with bow ties. Nobody needed much direction because the group was already laughing before we had them in position. Those are our favorite kind of portraits. The chemistry is already there, and we just have to catch it.

A Lakeside Ceremony and a Killer First Kiss

The ceremony happened on the Memorial Union Terrace, right along the shore of Lake Mendota. Dramatic clouds stacked up behind the couple as they exchanged vows. We shot wide to let that sky do its thing. Kathryn’s birdcage veil caught the breeze at exactly the right moment. Their first kiss drew the kind of cheer you feel in your chest. Not polite applause, but a real eruption from people who love them.

Afterward, we stole a few minutes near the ivy-covered buildings on campus. Old brick, climbing green ivy, and those famous colorful Terrace chairs gave us backdrops that felt distinctly Madison. If you’re considering this venue, know that the portrait options within a five-minute walk are outstanding. This vintage glam summer wedding at Madison’s most iconic lakefront venue had the right blend of elegance and easygoing charm. The campus grounds gave us frame after frame to prove it.

Tripp Commons Reception with All the Character

Tripp Commons is one of those rooms that makes you stop in the doorway. Dark wood paneling, a checkered marble floor, iron chandeliers, painted ceilings. The space already has so much character that a couple just needs to lean into it. Kathryn and Matt did exactly that. Black and gold escort cards, bold floral centerpieces, and table numbers named after beaches they’ve visited together. Every detail reinforced the Art Deco vibe without trying too hard.

Then there was the sonnet. Matt had written a poem for Kathryn, framed and displayed among greenery near the entrance. Guests kept pausing to lean in and read every line. We loved watching that happen. Their cake featured custom bobblehead toppers surrounded by fresh flowers. The moment they cut it under the warm glow of those chandeliers was perfectly unscripted. That shift from styled elegance to loose, real laughter is something we live for. Frequently Asked Questions about Memorial Union Weddings

What makes Tripp Commons at the Memorial Union a great wedding venue?

Tripp Commons is one of Madison’s most distinctive reception spaces. The room features dark wood paneling, a checkered marble floor, painted ceilings, and iron chandeliers that create a stately, almost ballroom-like atmosphere. Combined with its location right on Lake Mendota, it offers both historic grandeur and beautiful lakeside access for portraits and ceremonies.

Can you have an outdoor ceremony at the Memorial Union?

Yes. The Memorial Union Terrace is a popular spot for outdoor ceremonies, with views directly over Lake Mendota. The Terrace provides a relaxed, iconic Madison backdrop, and couples can move indoors to Tripp Commons or other event spaces for the reception. It’s a versatile setup that works well for both intimate and larger celebrations.
